Bai garden, Luoyang – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights

luoyang bai garden

Luoyang Bai Garden (洛阳白园), also known as the Bai Juyi Memorial Garden, stands as the sole garden in the nation dedicated to commemorating the famous Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi. Spending his later years in Luoyang for 18 years, Bai Juyi lived in the Xiangshan Temple on Longmen and had a profound attachment to the landscape. Following his wish, he was buried in Luoyang’s Xiangshan after his passing. Covering an area of 44 acres, Bai Garden boasts elegant and classical architecture, with flowers blooming in three seasons and evergreen foliage throughout the year, creating winding paths and secluded corners. Its main attractions include the Qinggu Area, Le Tian Tang (Joyful Heaven Hall), the Poetry Gallery, the Tomb Area, the Japanese Calligraphy Gallery, and the Daoshi Study, among others.

Upon entering the main gate of Bai Garden and ascending the steps, visitors arrive at the “Listening to Yi” Pavilion halfway up the mountain. This spot served as the place where Bai Juyi spent time playing chess, drinking, and discussing poetry with his friends Yuan Zhen, Liu Yuxi, and others in his later years. Following this is the “Joyful Heaven Hall,” where Bai Juyi’s statue stands.

After paying respects to the great poet’s statue, visitors can ascend the stone steps on the right to reach the peak of Pipa Peak, where Bai Juyi’s tomb is located. Surrounding the tomb are three large stone steles, one of which bears the inscription “Tomb of Tang’s Grand Master Bai Gong (唐少傅白公墓).” Encircled by lush cypress trees, the tomb exudes a solemn and dignified atmosphere.

Within the garden, the Poetry Gallery features 38 stone steles inscribed with Bai Juyi’s famous works, written by renowned calligraphers from China and abroad in various scripts including regular, cursive, seal, and clerical scripts. Visitors can admire Bai Juyi’s masterpieces while appreciating the beauty of calligraphy art. The Japanese Calligraphy Gallery was built for Sino-Japanese calligraphy exchanges and mainly exhibits works by contemporary Japanese calligraphy masters.
