Suzhou Travel Guide
Suzhou, located in southeastern Jiangsu Province, has long been celebrated by poets as a “paradise on earth” and marveled at by Marco Polo as the “Venice of the East.” This ancient city is nestled within a network of waterways, with streets built alongside rivers and canals. Buildings are constructed near the water, creating a distinctive landscape of “small bridges, flowing water, and charming homes.”
The beauty of Suzhou mirrors its people—reserved and gentle. There’s no need to retreat to the mountains for tranquility; a stroll through Suzhou’s gardens can captivate and soothe the soul. The picturesque scenery of Taihu Lake just outside Gusu City and the enchanting water towns, rich with Jiangnan charm, add a touch of elegance and vitality to this land of fish and rice. Walking along Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street, one can sense the artistic vibe of this two-thousand-year-old city.
The gardens and waterways of Suzhou offer just a glimpse of its splendor. To truly experience the essence of Jiangnan, one must listen to the melodic strains of Kunqu opera, chat with the locals, and leisurely explore the city’s nooks and crannies. This is the authentic taste of southern China, where history and culture blend seamlessly with modern life.
As soon as I arrived in Suzhou, I felt how cold the weather was. It was much colder than Nanjing. The lightweight down jacket I brought was not warm enough anymore, and now it’s time for the autumn pants that I didn’t wear in Nanjing to come into play. My first stop in Suzhou was the Humble Administrator’s Garden. We took our time and only arrived at 4 PM. The wintersweet under the sunlight was truly crystal clear and beautiful.… Read more »
Starting from Hangzhou, I initially planned to visit Xiyuan Temple first. However, due to traffic restrictions and other factors, I decided to change my route. I’m glad I chose Tiger Hill; it’s perfect for strolling around with children. The area is quite large, but it’s not overcrowded. ️ Dining There are many noodle shops near the South Gate of Tiger Hill, and while the flavors are average, they make for a decent meal. For dinner, we went to Xiuyuan Fresh… Read more »
Speechless at the Beauty of Suzhou in Autumn Even during my business trip, I made sure to spare some time for a stroll. Fortunately, the weather was great today, and the clear sky only accentuated the rich autumn scenery. Route: Tiger Hill South Gate ➡️ Wanjing Mountain Villa ➡️ Songfeng Mingyue Hall ➡️ Wuxiantang (there are incredibly beautiful trees behind it) ➡️ Yunyan Zen Temple ➡️ Yixie Garden ➡️ FenCui Pavilion Just follow the path and stroll slowly down. During the National Day holiday, the major attractions in Suzhou are sure to be crowded, and the Suzhou Museum is already fully booked.
During the day, it was 38 degrees while climbing Tiger Hill. I looked for cold drink stalls, shade, and air-conditioned boats. If possible, I would still recommend everyone to come in spring or autumn.
Humble Administrator’s Garden is one of the must-visit gardens in Suzhou. From 7 AM, the place was bustling with activity. The queue had already stretched to over a hundred. A straight line formed along the walkway, extending all the way to the entrance of the Suzhou Museum. The crowd included not only those waiting to enter the garden but also museum-goers, making it feel as if the line was almost spilling out onto the street. Once you step inside garden,… Read more »

Shantang Street (山塘街) does not require tickets or reservations. It is not very long but filled with many unique shops. I recommend visiting around five or six o’clock and staying until the lights come on, as the night view is beautiful. The photos taken at Tonggui Bridge (通贵桥) and Xinmin Bridge (新民桥) turn out great. During the day, you can explore Pingjiang Road, Zhuozheng Garden (拙政园), and Lion Grove (狮子林), as these attractions are all close to each other.
