International Peony Garden, Luoyang

Located in the heart of Central China, the Luoyang International Peony Garden (洛阳国际牡丹园) stands as a testament to the beauty and diversity of peonies, showcasing itself as the largest late-blooming peony garden in the region. Encompassing an expansive area of over 380 acres, this botanical marvel is a fusion of Chinese and foreign peony varieties, boasting more than 300 domestic cultivars alongside over 100 varieties imported from countries like Japan, France, and the United States. Additionally, the garden houses over 300 varieties of Chinese tree peonies, totaling over 600,000 peony plants. This rich assortment ranges from traditional favorites like the Fengdan White and Luoyang Red to newer hybrids such as the captivating “Space Peony,” ensuring that the Luoyang International Peony Garden remains a premier destination for peony enthusiasts.

The natural blooming season of peonies in the garden typically spans from mid-April to mid-May, attracting droves of visitors from both near and far each year. During this peak season, the garden becomes a kaleidoscope of colors as peonies of varying hues – red, white, yellow, and green – compete for attention, painting a picturesque scene for all who behold it. Among the myriad of blooms, standout attractions include the “Space Peony” and the “Millennium Peony King.” The former, bred under unique space cultivation conditions, boasts an extended blooming period and vivid colors, while the latter is a venerable ancient tree peony, bearing witness to over a millennium of Luoyang’s peony history.

Adding to the garden’s allure are nearly a thousand cold-resistant peony plants, which burst into bloom in early winter, typically during the first half of December. These winter-blooming peonies offer visitors a rare opportunity to witness the splendor of peonies even amidst the chilly embrace of winter, further enhancing the garden’s appeal as a year-round destination for floral enthusiasts.
