Lin Zexu Memorial Hall Fuzhou

The Lin Zexu Memorial Hall in Fuzhou (福州林则徐纪念馆) covers an area of 15,000 square meters and stands as a quintessential example of traditional Fujian architecture. Originally built in 1905 by descendants and followers of Lin Zexu, the memorial hall underwent various expansions and renovations over the years. It was formally established in 1982 and opened to the public on New Year’s Day in 1983. In 2008, the memorial hall underwent a significant expansion, increasing its size from 3,500 to 8,500 square meters, accompanied by a complete renewal of its exhibitions. On June 26, 2009, the newly expanded hall was officially reopened to visitors.

As of 2022, the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall houses a total of 393 precious cultural artifacts and exhibits, and is divided into several exhibition areas:

  • Introduction Hall: Provides an overview of Lin Zexu’s life and achievements.
  • Zone A: Focuses on Lin Zexu’s early life and his dedication to serving his country.
  • Zone B: Explores Lin Zexu’s tenure as a righteous and pragmatic official dedicated to the well-being of the state.
  • Zone C: Highlights Lin Zexu’s global perspective and influence, particularly his efforts in international diplomacy.
  • Zone D: Showcases Lin Zexu’s pioneering efforts in combating drug trafficking, including the famous events at Humen.

Each exhibition area is designed with specific themes and features, including interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and detailed reconstructions of historical scenes. For instance, Zone B vividly recreates the scene of Lin Zexu’s actions in Guangzhou during the Opium War, utilizing large-scale original oil paintings to depict his struggles and achievements. Zone D employs advanced multimedia technologies to simulate the atmosphere of historical events, such as the Humen Opium Destruction, using multiple projectors to create a comprehensive and immersive experience.

Moreover, the memorial hall includes areas for relaxation, reading, and film viewing, providing visitors with opportunities to delve deeper into Lin Zexu’s life through literature and multimedia resources. The exhibits are not only educational but also aim to inspire reflection on Lin Zexu’s legacy as a national hero who exemplified courage, integrity, and dedication in his service to China.
