lotus village park, huzhou

Lotus Village Park (莲花庄公园), originally built during the Yuan Dynasty, is a classical garden architecture located in Wuxing District, Huzhou City, China. Established by one of the Four Masters of Calligraphy in the Kai Shu style, Zhao Mengfu (赵孟頫), the area was once known as Baipingzhou during the Tang and Song Dynasties, celebrated for its picturesque landscapes. The renowned Tang poet Bai Juyi wrote “Five Records of Baipingzhou” in the fourth year of the Kaicheng era (838). The estate was later named Lotus Village when the eminent calligrapher and painter Zhao Mengfu developed his residence here during the Yuan Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has been renowned for its serene scenery, characterized by clear waters and lotus blossoms.

The park’s design is intricately crafted, utilizing the terrain to compose a picturesque scenery with rocks, water bodies, vegetation, and architecture, creating a rich and vibrant spatial environment. The park is divided into four main areas: the West Zone, Central Zone, East Zone, and the Hidden Garden, each offering unique landscapes and architectural features. The West Zone, accessed through Lin Hengtang Road, features a gate with an inscription by the renowned calligrapher Zhao Puchu and a stele inscribed with the full text of Zhao Mengfu’s “吴兴赋 (Wuxing Fu)” on the left side upon entering. In the Central Zone, there is a lotus pond in the front and undulating low hills in the back, with “Songzhai” and “Ouboting” pavilions built by the pond, connected by a corridor. The Lotus Peak on the west side of the pavilion is an ancient relic from Zhao Mengfu’s era, inscribed with the seal script for Lotus Peak, bearing his mark. The East Zone features a prominent rockery as the main attraction, with the “Three-Grade Stone (三品石)” inside and buildings such as the “Daya Hall (大雅堂),” “Xiaoqing Pavilion (晓清阁),” and “Twin Pavilion (双亭).”

Lotus Village Park is renowned for its lotus flowers, with the central lotus pond being filled with them. During the peak of summer, the lotus flowers bloom magnificently, adding to the park’s allure. The park boasts a green coverage rate of over eighty percent, with lush greenery and flourishing flora throughout the year. Various trees and plants such as pine, bamboo, plum, gingko, magnolia, camphor, cherry blossom, and osmanthus provide visitors with a beautiful and comfortable environment for leisurely strolls.
