The Tomb of Di Renjie (狄仁杰墓) is located near the White Horse Temple, 12 kilometers east of Luoyang City in Henan Province. It is a circular earthen mound. In front of the tomb, there are two surviving stone tablets. The larger one bears the inscription “Tomb of the Loyal Minister Di Liang” (狄梁公墓), indicating its significance. This tablet was re-erected in the 21st year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1593).
However, the exact location of Di Renjie’s tomb is subject to some controversy. Archaeologists suggest that this tomb is more likely that of Xue Huaiyi, the abbot of the White Horse Temple during the Wu Zhou period of the Tang Dynasty, who was posthumously titled “Duke of Liang.” Historical records confirm that Xue Huaiyi was buried at the White Horse Temple, while there is no mention of Di Renjie being buried there. Some believe that Di Renjie’s tomb is located north of Zhaiquan Village in Mengjin County, Luoyang City, at a place called Shuangbei’ao.
Di Renjie, also known as Huaiying, was a prominent politician and prime minister during the Tang Dynasty. Born into a prominent family in Taiyuan, he excelled in the imperial examinations and held various governmental positions throughout his career. Notably, he served as an imperial censor, governor, and minister of justice. He gained fame for his fearlessness in advising the ruling empress Wu Zetian and played a key role in advocating for the restoration of Prince Li Xian as the heir apparent, ensuring the stability of the Tang Dynasty.
Di Renjie passed away in the first year of the Jiucheng era (700 AD) and was posthumously honored with the title of Wenchang Right Assistant Minister and the epithet “Wenhui.” After the restoration of the Tang Dynasty, he was further honored with the title of Sikong. Di Renjie was renowned for his keen sense of judgment and exceptional skills in solving cases, earning him the title of “divine detective” by later generations. His life was not only marked by political wisdom and courage but also by integrity, righteousness, and compassion for the people, earning him praise throughout the ages.
