Xianghu Lake (湘湖), known as the “Sister Lake” of West Lake, is hailed as the birthplace of Zhejiang civilization, unearthing the world’s earliest dugout canoe. This scenic area holds historical significance as the hometown of Tang Dynasty poet He Zhizhang, where renowned figures like Li Bai, Lu You, and Wen Tianxiang have left behind timeless poetry and prose. In contrast to the bustling atmosphere of West Lake, Xianghu Lake is like a quiet young girl, attracting visitors who appreciate serenity.
Stretching from northeast to southwest, the lake features a narrow and elongated northeastern portion, while the southwestern part widens, resembling a gourd with a long neck. The area is divided into several zones, including the Cross-Lake Bridge Scenic Area, Xia Sun Cultural Zone, and Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park (Xiaoshan Children’s Park), with the main attractions concentrated in the northern part of the lake. Strolling along the lake shore or taking a boat ride to admire the scenery is a delightful experience for visitors seeking peace and tranquility. Xianghu Lake stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Hangzhou, making it a serene retreat for those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle.

Highlights of Xianghu Lake
Xia Sun Cultural Zone
Close to Xianglifang, the Xia Sun Cultural Zone stands as a picturesque ancient village with whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs. Once the dwelling place of descendants of Sun Quan, it has evolved into a captivating cultural landscape. The journey through this area allows appreciation of Hui-style architecture, with the Sun Clan Ancestral Hall and the traditional stage displaying an antique charm. Intricate roof decorations add to the overall aesthetic appeal. Cross-Lake Bridge Area
Heading south along the lake in a counterclockwise direction, passing the Yuewangcheng Ruins and Lotus Flower Manor, after approximately 2 kilometers, one reaches the Cross-Lake Bridge. This elongated bridge spanning the lake is a signature landmark of Xianghu Lake, offering a stunning panoramic view when captured from a distance against the backdrop of the lake and surrounding hills. The picturesque scene rivals the renowned Broken Bridge of West Lake. In this vicinity, artifacts dating back 8,000 years were discovered, showcasing the rich archaeological heritage. The Cross-Lake Bridge Site Museum on the small island south of the bridge displays Neolithic relics such as painted pottery and bone artifacts, alongside reconstructed archaeological sites, making it an educational experience suitable for families with children.
Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park
On the eastern end of the Cross-Lake Bridge lies the Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park and Birdsong Forest, both popular among young visitors. The Polar Ocean Park features captivating exhibits of adorable animals from distant oceans within themed environments like the polar region, rainforest, and deep sea. Continuing south from the bridge, during the summer, families can enjoy a day at the lakeside golden beach, where children can play in the sand and water. Additionally, around 19:45, the Lakeside Plaza hosts a mesmerizing “Water Show,” featuring a music fountain display that attracts visitors who often make a special trip to witness this captivating spectacle.
