This 4-day itinerary will take you deep into the heart of Gannan, where Tibetan culture thrives and breathtaking natural landscapes abound. From the magnificent Labrang Monastery to the serene Gahai Lake and the majestic First Bend of the Yellow River, this journey offers a perfect blend of spiritual exploration and outdoor adventure. Along the way, you’ll experience sacred Tibetan rituals, explore ancient monasteries, and marvel at stunning geological formations like the Zecha Stone Forest. Get ready to immerse yourself in the rich culture and spectacular scenery of Gannan.
Day 1: Labrang Monastery
On the first day, start early from Lanzhou, driving approximately four hours to reach Xiahe. After lunch, visit the world-renowned Labrang Monastery, often referred to as the “Capital of Tibetan Studies.” This sprawling complex features numerous prayer halls and temples, making it one of the most significant Tibetan monasteries outside of Tibet. To fully appreciate the depth of Tibetan Buddhism, it’s highly recommended to hire a Lama guide for a more detailed tour.
After exploring the monastery, take part in a unique spiritual experience by walking along the world’s longest prayer wheel corridor, which contains more than 1,720 prayer wheels. Join the pilgrims in turning the wheels, purifying your soul in the process. As the day comes to an end, ascend to the Sunbathing Buddha Platform for a panoramic view of the entire monastery and the stunning sunset over the complex.
Dining: Since the morning involves a long drive, pack some snacks and motion sickness medication. Xiahe has a variety of affordable Tibetan and Sichuan restaurants offering authentic local flavors. However, due to the high altitude and lower boiling point, rice may be slightly undercooked, so consume sparingly.
Accommodation: Xiahe offers a wide range of accommodations, from four-star hotels like Minhang Hotel to budget-friendly guesthouses. One highly recommended place is Red Stone Youth Hostel, close to Labrang Monastery and popular among travelers, making it a great spot for carpooling to nearby attractions.
Day 2: Labrang Monastery > Gahai-Zecha Nature Reserve > First Bend of the Yellow River
Begin your day by returning to Labrang Monastery for the early morning monks’ prayer session, an enlightening experience that provides a deep dive into Tibetan Buddhist practices. The chanting of the monks and the spiritual atmosphere make for a peaceful start to the day.
Afterward, head west by car toward Gahai-Zecha Nature Reserve, passing through lush grasslands. At Gahai Lake, you can admire the crystal-clear reflections of the clouds and mountains in the water. The lake is surrounded by vast meadows where cattle and sheep graze freely. The high altitude calls for slow, easy walks to avoid exhaustion while taking in the stunning natural scenery.
Continue your journey westward toward the First Bend of the Yellow River. This iconic location offers breathtaking views of the river as it winds its way through the vast grasslands. The panoramic vistas and the sense of freedom you’ll feel as the open plains unfold before you are awe-inspiring. The river, gently curving like a ribbon, presents a striking contrast to the wide expanses of land.
Dining: Pack some light snacks for the road, as the journey involves frequent stops. Once you arrive at Maqu County, you’ll find a selection of Tibetan and halal restaurants. Choose a place that suits your preferences for a hearty meal.
Accommodation: While accommodations in Maqu are not as convenient as in Xiahe, there are several comfortable guesthouses available for a good night’s rest. Choose based on your personal needs and budget.
Day 3: Ge’erdeng Temple > Namo Gorge > Bailong River
Drive 100 kilometers in the morning to reach Langmusi Town in Luqu County. Begin your day by visiting the Ge’erdeng Temple, located within the Sichuan border. This temple is a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhist and Islamic cultures, with its striking combination of a Tibetan monastery and a nearby mosque.
After exploring the temple, take a short trek into the Namo Gorge. This gorge is renowned for its stunning beauty, with towering rock formations and lush greenery lining the trail. Along the way, you can visit the famous Fairy Cave, known as “Huardanamo,” where legend has it that fairies reside. Further into the gorge, you can explore Panlong Cave, where the Bailong River originates. Drink from its pure, sacred water and enjoy the tranquility of this spiritual and natural haven.
Dining: On the third day, don’t miss out on trying traditional Tibetan cuisine. Sample dishes like tsampa (barley flour), yak yogurt, jerma rice, stone-steamed lamb, and Tibetan dumplings. Restaurants such as Lisa’s and Dalao’s offer authentic Tibetan flavors with slight modifications to suit wider tastes.
Accommodation: Though accommodations in Langmusi Town are somewhat limited, they still offer adequate facilities for a good night’s rest. Choose based on your preferences, but rest assured you’ll find a comfortable place to stay.
Day 4: Sky Burial Platform > Zecha Stone Forest
On your final day, wake up early to visit the Sky Burial Platform near Langmusi. This sacred Tibetan practice offers a profound insight into the culture’s deep connection with life and death. Please be respectful during your visit – maintain a proper distance and refrain from taking photos, as this is a sensitive and sacred tradition.
Afterward, drive 52 kilometers to the Zecha Stone Forest, where you’ll be captivated by the forest’s otherworldly rock formations. These jagged, towering rocks have been carved by natural forces over millennia, creating spectacular shapes like the Monkey Watching the Moon, the Jade Maiden, the Old Woman, the General Peak, and the Monk Stone. Strolling through this remarkable landscape is a meditative experience, offering a serene encounter with nature.
Dining: Start your day with breakfast in Langmusi. For lunch, head to the Zecha Stone Forest Resort for a meal before returning to Hezuo. Once back in the city, cap off your trip by indulging in local specialties like yak yogurt and roast lamb, leaving with fond memories of Gannan’s culinary delights.
Accommodation: It’s recommended to spend the night in Hezuo before heading back to Lanzhou. This will allow for proper rest, preventing fatigue from long drives and ensuring a safe return journey.
