Guizhou Nationalities Museum (贵州民族博物馆), located within the iconic building of the Ethnic Culture Palace in Guiyang, spans an impressive area of 13,175 square meters. The museum primarily focuses on the material culture of various ethnic groups in Southwest China, with a special emphasis on the 17 indigenous minorities of Guizhou, such as the Miao, Buyi, Dong, Tujia, Yi, Gelao, and Shui. Its extensive collection comprises tangible artifacts related to the daily lives and production activities of these ethnic groups, showcasing traditional costumes, silverware, masks, tools, ethnic literature, ancient manuscripts, as well as audio-visual materials depicting the historical political, economic, and cultural customs of these diverse communities. The museum proudly houses over 14,000 sets of exhibits.

Location and Transportation

The Guizhou Nationalities Museum is situated at the southern square of Zhucheng Plaza, along Yingbin Avenue and Zunyi Road in Guiyang city. It is positioned to the east of the South Ming River in Guiyang and is adjacent to the Guiyang Railway Station to the west.

To get there, you can take bus 4, 6, 11, 16, 18, 21, 63, 78, 81, 82, 306, 310, or 319 and get off at Jiandao Street Intersection Stop (箭道街路口站).


Exhibitions in Guizhou Nationalities Museum

The permanent exhibitions are divided into two main displays: “Guizhou Ethnic Customs Exhibition” and “Guizhou Minority Cultural Relics Fine Collection Exhibition.”

The “Guizhou Ethnic Customs Exhibition” unfolds across the museum’s second-floor lobby and the third-floor A, B, and C halls, covering an area of approximately 2,500 square meters. This exhibition is structured into five sections: the “Prologue,” “Where We Come From,” “Our Homeland,” “Our Life,” and “Where We Are Going.” It serves as an insightful journey into the production, life, and cultural nuances of the 18 ethnic groups that have long resided in Guizhou.

On the twenty-fourth floor of the building, the “Guizhou Minority Cultural Relics Fine Collection Exhibition” occupies a space of 350 square meters. Showcasing 187 sets of the most distinctive and historically valuable clothing and accessories from various ethnic minorities in Guizhou, this exhibition provides visitors with a deeper appreciation of the unique characteristics and highlights of these cultures.

In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts a variety of dynamic special exhibitions. These may include themed displays on ethnic costumes, photography masterpieces, painting exhibitions, and more.
