The Old Summer Palace, also known as the Yuanmingyuan, is a former imperial garden located in the Haidian District of Beijing, China. It covers an area of 350 hectares and is about 27 kilometers away from the Temple of Heaven.
To get to the Old Summer Palace from the Temple of Heaven, there are several transportation options available:
Subway:
Exit the Temple of Heaven from the north gate, walk about 500 meters to the north to take subway line 7 at Qiaowan Station (桥湾), transfer to line 4 at Caishikou Station (菜市口), and get off at the Old Summer Palace (圆明园). The journey takes about 1 hour and costs 5 RMB.
Take subway line 8 at Tianqiao Station (天桥) at the west gate of the Temple of Heaven, transfer to line 10 at Beitucheng Station (北土城) and then to line 4 at Haidian Huangzhuang Station (海淀黄庄), and get off at the Old Summer Palace. The journey takes about 1 hour and 10 mintues and costs 5 RMB.
Or, you can also take subway line 5 at east gate of the Temple of Heaven, transfer to line 10 at Huixin Xijie Nankou Station (惠新西街南口) and then to line 4 at Haidian Huangzhuang Station (海淀黄庄), and finally get off at the Old Summer Palace. This option also takes about 1 hour and costs 5 RMB.
Bus:
Although there are some buses connecting these two attractions, this mode of transport involves too many transfers and consumes too much time. So, we highly recommend you against it.
Taxi:
You can also take a taxi from the Temple of Heaven to the Old Summer Palace. The trip should take around 40 minutes and the fare would be about 80 RMB, depending on traffic.
