History of St. Paul’s Church

The journey from site selection to completion spanned several years. In 1910, the Anglican Church began its missionary work in Nanjing, leasing a house on Mafu Street for worship. By 1912, a property on Menlianqiao, present-day Taiping South Road, was purchased. The following year saw the demolition of the old building, signaling the commencement of the church’s reconstruction. Spearheading the project was the church leader, Ji Mengji, who successfully solicited a donation from an American Anglican to fund the construction. This generous donor’s son had sacrificed his life in World War I, and the donation was made in his memory.

St. Paul’s Church was designed in the form of a traditional cathedral, with supervision provided by the architect Qi Zhaochang from Jinling University. The construction was undertaken by the Chen Mingji Construction Company. The total cost of the project, including equipment, amounted to $12,000. In 1922, the old church was dismantled with funds from the Anglican Diocese of Jiangsu, and two new churches were erected in its place. The larger church, a Gothic-style structure, stood 11 meters tall, 34 meters long, and 12.6 meters wide, with a four-story bell tower reaching 18 meters in height. The building covered an area of 485.6 square meters. Additionally, a smaller chapel with an area of 288.8 square meters was constructed for smaller religious gatherings. St. Paul’s Church was officially completed in 1923 and was named in honor of its patron saint.
