Bus: Take bus 15, 146, 172, 600, 633, 653, 675, 681, 804, 849, 856, 863, 903, 907, 908, or 954 and get off at Wanghailou Stop (望海楼).
Metro: The nearest metro station to the church at the moment is Jinshi Bridge (金狮桥) on line 3. After getting out of the station from Exit B, you can transfer to Bus 633, 675, or 907 or walk to cover the remaining 1.1 kilometers.

A Brief History of Wanghailou Church
Wanghailou Church is located in an area that originally housed the Wanghailou Pavilion, built during the Qing Dynasty in the Kangxi era. The pavilion served as a recreational spot for the Qing emperor during his visits to Tianjin. This area was a major hub for both land and water traffic, with merchants and ships frequently converging. Nearby, there were several temples, including Chongxi Temple and Wanghai Temple.
After the Second Opium War, the Qing government was forced to sign the humiliating Treaty of Beijing, granting foreign powers, including France, the rights to lease and build in various parts of China. In 1862, France acquired a 15-acre area around the Wanghailou Pavilion for long-term lease. In December 1869, French missionary Father Xavier began demolishing Chongxi Temple and built a large Catholic church on its foundation. The church, a prime example of Gothic architecture, was rectangular in shape and featured three bell towers, resembling pen holders. The church was named “Notre-Dame de la Victoire” (Our Lady of Victory), and this name was inscribed in French on a marble plaque on the bell tower. Locals referred to it as Wanghailou Church.
The church was destroyed twice during the Qing Dynasty—first in the Tianjin Church Incident in 1870, and again during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The current church was rebuilt in 1903 using indemnities from the Boxer Rebellion, closely following the original design. The church suffered significant damage during the 1976 earthquake but was repaired in 1983 by the government. Today, it stands as a historical landmark in Tianjin.
