Day 1: Mu’s Residence > Lion Hill > Wangu Pavilion > Square Street > Big Water Wheel > Black Dragon Pool Park
The first stop is Lijiang Ancient Town. The town is large and has many worthwhile places to visit. Here are a few recommended spots:
Stop 1: Mu’s Residence (2 hours)
Mu’s Residence was the home of the Mu family chieftains of Lijiang. The architecture combines the styles of the Ming Dynasty with the craftsmanship of the Bai and Naxi ethnic groups, creating a magnificent structure. Although it was the residence of a chieftain, its splendor rivals that of the imperial palaces, said to be modeled after the Forbidden City. The TV series “Mu’s Residence” and “Money King” were filmed here.
Tip: There are free guided tours available. Following the guide will provide a deeper understanding of the history behind Mu’s Residence.
Stop 2: Lion Hill & Wangu Pavilion (1 hour)
Behind Mu’s Residence is Lion Hill, a small hill that takes about 30 minutes to an hour to reach the top. From here, you can overlook the entire ancient town, with its grey rooftops and the snow-capped mountains in the background, making for stunning photographs. At the top of Lion Hill stands Wangu Pavilion, offering the best view of the town below. The pavilion has 13 eaves representing the 13 peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and features 2300 intricate auspicious patterns symbolizing the 23 ethnic groups living in Lijiang, along with dragon motifs, coffered ceilings, and stone carvings.
Tip: Lion Hill is open from 09:00 to 17:00.
Stop 3: Square Street (2 hours)
Square Street is the center of the ancient town and the busiest area. It is named for its four radiating streets: July 1st Street, May 1st Street, Xinhua Street, and East Street. Starting from Square Street, wander the cobblestone streets of the ancient town, enjoy Naxi dances, visit shops selling unique souvenirs, and taste local snacks like baba, tofu pudding, and preserved fruit while listening to Naxi classical music for a relaxing morning.
Tip: Wear comfortable flat shoes or sneakers, as the streets are paved with uneven stones.
Stop 4: Big Water Wheel (0.5 hours)
Walking north through the bar street, you will reach the Big Water Wheel, located at the entrance of Lijiang Ancient Town. It is a symbol of the town. Take a photo with the water wheel and the nearby screen wall for a classic tourist snapshot.
Stop 5: Black Dragon Pool Park (2 hours)
From Square Street to the Big Water Wheel, head north along the Jade River corridor for about 1000 meters to reach Black Dragon Pool Park. This park is a great spot for photographing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and even if you’re not taking pictures, it’s a lovely place to stroll and enjoy the scenery.
Tips: If you have time, you can climb Elephant Hill to get a panoramic view of the ancient town. The hike to the top takes about 30 minutes, but you cannot start the climb after 4 PM, so plan accordingly. You need to purchase the Lijiang Ancient Town Maintenance Fee in advance. As of January 1, 2019, the fee is 50 yuan and is required to enter the park.
Day 2: Shuhe Ancient Town > Lashihai
Stop 1: Shuhe Ancient Town (4 Hours)
Start your day early and head to Shuhe Ancient Town. Located northwest of Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe offers a quieter, more serene atmosphere. Though smaller and with fewer attractions than Lijiang, Shuhe is worth exploring. Follow the “Eight Sights of Shuhe” route, which includes: Fireflies of the Night Market: “Sifang Bridge”, Willows and Smoke: “Qinglong Bridge”, Red Leaves of Western Hills: “Xishan”, Stone Lotus Night Reading: “Shilian Temple”, Moon Viewing from Longmen: “San Sheng Palace”, Snow Mountain Reflection, Fish and Water Kinship: “Jiuding Longtan”, Broken Stele Echo: “Jiuding Longtan.”
Stop 2: Lashihai (4 Hours)
From Shuhe Ancient Town, it takes about half an hour to reach Lashihai. Known as the water source of Lijiang, Lashihai is a picturesque area and the first wetland nature reserve named in Yunnan. It serves as a winter habitat for many migratory birds and is a prime spot for horseback riding, boating, and birdwatching. The nearby Tea Horse Road in Lashihai offers insights into the economic and cultural exchanges of southwestern China’s ethnic minorities.
Tips:
- The best time for birdwatching at Lashihai is from December to February.
- Entry ticket is 30 yuan per person; additional fees apply for horseback riding and boating.
- Recommended transportation: self-driving, chartered car, or tour bus. Public buses are less convenient and time-consuming.
Day 3: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain > Yunshanping > Baishui River > Ganhai
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (4-6 Hours)
It is recommended to take a dedicated shuttle bus from Zhongyi Market in Lijiang Old Town to the scenic area. The ride takes about an hour and is both affordable and convenient. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is an iconic landmark of Lijiang. Although the snow cover has decreased in recent years, it remains a must-see attraction.
Yunshanping and Blue Moon Valley are notable spots on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with Blue Moon Valley often referred to as “Little Jiuzhaigou” for its stunning scenery. The mountain features three cable cars that provide easy access to various viewpoints of the snow-capped peaks.
On the mountain, you can also experience the performance “Impression Lijiang,” which, set against the majestic snow-capped backdrop, showcases artistic representations of the lives of Yunnan’s ethnic groups, providing a profound spiritual experience.
Tips:
- The cable car reaches an elevation of over 4,000 meters, where altitude sickness is common. It is advisable to purchase an oxygen bottle and carry some medication.
- The best seasons to visit are spring, autumn, and winter. In July, the main cable car may have no snow; avoid October as the snow may be obscured by clouds.
- Due to strong UV rays on the snow mountain, protect yourself with sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- At high altitudes, rent a down jacket if needed; avoid renting at the eco-car site as prices are high.
- Buy an oxygen bottle in advance at a pharmacy, as items within the scenic area are expensive.
Day 4: Lugu Lake Scenic Area > Wooden Boat Lake Tour (Daluoshui Wharf) > Mosuo Ethnic Bonfire Party
Lijiang Old Town to Lugu Lake
You can choose to travel to Lugu Lake by bus or charter car, with the bus being the preferred option. If you opt for a charter car, make sure to use a reputable service rather than an unofficial one, and prioritize safety over cost. The journey takes approximately 6-7 hours.
Stop 1: Lugu Lake Viewing Platform (0.5 Hours)
Arrive at Lugu Lake in the afternoon. The viewing platform is located right at the entrance of the Lugu Lake Scenic Area, offering the best vantage point for capturing the panoramic views of the lake. Be sure to take some memorable photos. Afterward, head to your reserved guesthouse to drop off your luggage and rest briefly before going to the dock for a wooden boat tour of the lake.
Stop 2: Wooden Boat Lake Tour (1 hour)
Almost every village around the lake has a dock where you can take a wooden boat ride. From the boat, you can enjoy the crystal-clear blue waters of Lugu Lake and observe the soaring seagulls. The boat ride can become monotonous after a while, so around forty minutes is usually sufficient.
Stop 3: Mosuo Ethnic Bonfire Party (2 hours)
After dinner, as night falls, you can attend a Mosuo ethnic bonfire party in the village. The entrance fee is 30 RMB. Gather around the blazing fire, where the Mosuo people dress in traditional attire and perform lively songs and dances. The event is festive and vibrant. Afterward, you can head to a nearby hill to stargaze. It’s advisable to rest early in preparation for tomorrow’s lake tour.
Day 5: Lugu Lake Circumference
You can choose to walk or drive around Lugu Lake. Walking allows for a more immersive experience of the beautiful scenery, while driving is more convenient and less strenuous. There are many bicycle rental stations within the Lugu Lake Scenic Area. It is recommended to cycle around Lover’s Wharf, Lugu Lake Town, Caohai, and the Walking Bridge area, as this route is relatively flat and easy to ride.
Clockwise Route Around the Lake:
- Daluoshui Wharf → Rigu Wharf, Rigu Viewing Platform
- Goddess Bay → Caohai → Walking Bridge
Lugu Lake has many curves and steep sections, so be cautious and travel slowly regardless of your mode of transportation. There are also quite a few mosquitoes around Lugu Lake, so it’s advisable to bring insect repellent.
After completing your lake tour, take a bus back to Lijiang, marking the end of your trip to Lijiang.
