Zhangzhou Travel Guide
Located in southeastern Fujian Province, Zhangzhou is a prefecture-level city known as one of the cradles of Minnan culture. This area not only boasts a rich cultural heritage but also features stunning natural landscapes and unique architectural sites. Among its highlights are the revered Sanping Temple, the fascinating Fengdong Stone, and the distinctive Fujian Tulou (earthen buildings). Zhangzhou is also home to scenic spots like Yundongyan and the ancient town of Yunshuiyao, the picturesque setting for the film The Knot.
Zhangzhou is renowned for its nearly 2,000 Tulou structures, traditional dwellings with rich historical significance. No visit to the city is complete without exploring these unique buildings. From the oldest Qiyun Building to the largest Yuchang Building, as well as Hetianlou and the towering Hegui Building, these Tulou come in various shapes such as square, rectangular, oval, octagonal, and more. Their intricate craftsmanship and the ingenuity of ancient builders leave visitors in awe, all while providing a glimpse into the pastoral charm of Minnan’s countryside.
The wind is really strong this season. But riding an electric scooter around the island is so much fun!
Thanks to my enthusiastic colleague’s recommendation, I had three days and nights of fun and two days and nights of delicious food. The cuisine in Zhangzhou Ancient City was really tasty; there was just too much to eat!
Today, I set off from Foshan and passed through Huizhou, Heyuan, and Meizhou. I finally arrived at the Nanjing Tulou at 5 PM, totally exhausted. There is an entrance fee for the Tulou, which is 90 yuan per person.
