longtan ancient town youyang

Longtan Ancient Town(龙潭古镇), situated in the heart of Chongqing’s Youyang County, is a place where time seems to stand still. Founded in the first year of the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era in 1736, it was officially designated as a town in 1935 during the 24th year of the Republic of China. This town’s rich history and unique features have made it a captivating destination for those seeking to explore China’s past.

Longtan Ancient Town owes much of its historical significance to its strategic location along the Longtan River and You River. This advantageous position made it a thriving hub for commerce during its heyday. During World War II, the town became a refuge for those seeking safety from the conflict, with its population ballooning to 80,000 in a mere 1.5 square kilometers, earning the nickname “Little Nanjing” due to its remarkable resilience and vibrant community.

The town’s name, Longtan, derives from its geographical features. Two pools, resembling the eyes of a dragon, often accumulate water under the Fulong Mountain. The ancient town is nestled between these “dragon eyes,” and the layout of the town, as it meanders through these features, resembles the shape of a dragon’s nose, hence the name.
