Lushan Mountain Museum

Lushan Mountain Museum (庐山博物馆), covering over 20,000 square meters, is renowned for its extensive collection, primarily featuring ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings. The museum is housed in a traditional one-story courtyard building with a rectangular central courtyard surrounded by exhibition rooms. The 460-square-meter courtyard is encircled by glass-enclosed inner corridors that connect to various rooms, while the outer corridors on the south, west, and north facades are open, decorated with geometric lattice patterns, and connected to an octagonal pavilion at the northwest corner. The museum is beautifully situated with three sides against the mountain and one side facing a lake, enveloped by lush greenery and tall trees.

The museum’s permanent exhibits include “Famous Figures and Lushan Mountain Throughout History,” “Lushan Villa Cultural Relics Exhibition,” “The Five Hundred Arhats,” “Photos of Party and State Leaders on Lushan,” “Original Display of Mao Zedong’s Bedroom in Villa No. 1,” “Mao Zedong’s Books Used on Lushan,” “Exhibition on the Geological Evolution of Lushan,” “Lushan Metamorphic Complex and Fault-Block Mountain,” “Lushan Geomorphological Landscapes,” “Quaternary Glacial Relics on Lushan,” and a “Lushan Terrain Model.”

In November 1953, the Lushan Administration Bureau established departments to manage the collection of cultural relics from temples, historical sites, and villas on the mountain. In March 1985, the museum was relocated to Villa No. 1, the former residence of Mao Zedong, and became a comprehensive local museum. In 2003, it began offering free admission. By May 2009, it was recognized as a National Level 3 Museum, and on September 18, 2018, it was upgraded to a National Level 2 Museum by the China Museums Association. The Lushan Mountain Museum now houses over 5,308 pieces/sets of artifacts, including 1,459 precious cultural relics.
