The Shandong Art Museum (山东美术馆), established in July 1977 and newly opened to the public on October 12, 2013, is a prominent cultural institution in Jinan, Shandong Province. It houses a diverse collection including traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media artworks, watercolor and gouache paintings, sketches, folk art, calligraphy, seal engraving, and other categories of art.
The museum’s architecture creatively blends elements symbolizing “city” represented by cubic forms and “mountain” represented by cubic variations. Its rooftop skylight designs symbolize “spring,” integrating the distinctive characteristics of Jinan, known as the “Spring City.”
Spanning across 12 exhibition halls spread from the first to the fourth floor, with the fourth floor dedicated as a permanent exhibition area, the museum boasts a total design area of 12,393.7 square meters. The exhibition walls provide a total length of 3,098 meters for displaying artworks. The main exhibition hall on the first floor features a height of 8 meters and is equipped with movable suspended ceilings and hanging activity panels. The second and third-floor galleries have a ceiling height of 4 meters. The total usable exhibition area is 8,502 square meters with a display line length of 2,125 meters, allowing for the simultaneous display of approximately 708 artworks, calculated based on each piece requiring 1.5 meters of space with 1.5 meters of spacing between them.
Additionally, the museum offers dining facilities including a restaurant located on the south side of the basement, integrated with a sunken courtyard and ground-level café, accommodating over 200 guests simultaneously. The café, situated on the museum’s first floor south side, spans 400 square meters and primarily serves coffee combined with light meals. It provides an elegant environment with expansive views and offers free reading services of art and related academic books.
