2 Day Zhangye Itinerary

Zhangye, a city nestled along the Silk Road, offers visitors an exciting mix of natural wonders and cultural heritage. In this two-day itinerary, you’ll explore the vast Junmachang Horse Ranch, marvel at the breathtaking Binggou and Zhangye Danxia landforms, and visit historic sites like the Shanxi Guild Hall and the Dafo Temple. From vivid landscapes to ancient architecture, Zhangye promises an unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Junmachang Horse Ranch > Shanxi Guild Hall > Binggou Danxia Geopark

This day covers a longer route, so it’s recommended to either drive yourself or hire a car. Begin your journey in the morning, heading to the Junmachang Horse Ranch, located 55 kilometers south of Shandan County. It is the oldest horse ranch in the world, the largest in Asia, and the second-largest globally. The area boasts flat terrain with abundant water and lush grass. During the summer, you’ll find the landscape a vibrant green, while winter turns it into a golden wonderland. Regardless of the season, the ranch offers breathtaking natural beauty.

At noon, return to Zhangye city for lunch in the Old Street area, where you can savor a variety of local dishes. Afterward, explore the nearby Shanxi Guild Hall to experience the rich merchant culture that thrived along the ancient Silk Road.

In the afternoon, head to Binggou Danxia Geopark, where you can witness the majestic, palace-like rock formations that the park is famous for. Stay until sunset to capture the magical colors of the setting sun over the Danxia landscape.

Dining: For lunch, Old Street is the perfect spot to try authentic Zhangye delicacies, which are affordable and full of local flavor. Be sure to try dishes like cuoyu (handmade noodles), chaopao (fried dumplings), and niurou xiaofan (beef rice). After your meal, relax with a refreshing cup of apricot peel tea.

Accommodation: Spend the night at a local farmstay near Linze Danxia Geopark. This will allow you to enjoy a traditional Gansu-style farmhouse dinner and be ready for the next day’s early sunrise over the colorful Danxia landscape.

Day 2: Zhangye Rainbow Mountains > Dafo Temple > Muta Temple

Start your day by heading to the Zhangye Rainbow Mountains (also known as Zhangye Danxia Geopark) early in the morning. The vivid hues of the mountains are most striking at dawn, so be sure to arrive early. The temperature can fluctuate significantly, so it’s advisable to bring warm clothing, especially in the morning and evening.

By midday, return to the city for lunch near Zhangye’s central Drum Tower. In the afternoon, visit the Dafo Temple, home to the largest reclining Buddha in China, and learn about the fascinating history of the Hexi Corridor. From there, take a short walk to Muta Temple, which offers a panoramic view of Zhangye from its wooden tower. In the evening, visit the bustling night market near Muta Temple, where you can immerse yourself in the local lifestyle and pick up some unique souvenirs.

Dining: The area around the Drum Tower is Zhangye’s city center, offering a wide selection of restaurants and local specialties. You can find eateries with great food and ambiance to enjoy a relaxing meal.

Accommodation: Hotels around the Drum Tower are plentiful and varied, ranging from budget options to more luxurious accommodations. Choose one that fits your preferences and enjoy a comfortable stay before departing the following day.
