Xining Travel Guide

Xining, the capital and major city of Qinghai Province, was historically known as Xiping County. Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xining is famed for its cool summer climate and is often referred to as the “Summer Capital.” The city boasts a wealth of natural and cultural attractions and holds a unique urban charm. With its pleasant environment, relaxed pace of life, and rich cultural diversity, Xining has been consistently ranked among China’s top ten summer resorts, quietest cities, and happiest cities.

Xining has a typical plateau climate, featuring long and cold winters, a brief spring, and cool, scenic summers and autumns. May is a delightful time to visit when the city begins to bloom and Bird Island on Qinghai Lake becomes a haven for migratory birds from the south—a perfect time for birdwatching. In July, the weather is mild and comfortable, and the golden sea of blooming rapeseed flowers across the hills creates a stunning landscape. July and August are also the best months to explore the breathtaking beauty of Qinghai Lake, surrounded by mountains and brilliant yellow fields. During this time, the annual Tour of Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race is held, drawing attention from around the world.
