Yuehe Historic Block (月河历史街区), located in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, is one of the most intact, largest, and culturally rich areas in the urban district. It stands out as a prime example showcasing the distinctive residential and cultural features of Jiangnan water towns. Running alongside its southern side is a branch of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which curves around the city like a crescent moon, giving rise to its name, Yuehe (Moon River).
The development of Yuehe Block traces back to the construction of the outer city of Jiaxing in the first year of the Tang Wende era (888 AD). By the Southern Song Dynasty, it had evolved into a prosperous urban area, characterized by thriving commerce and bustling neighborhoods. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yuehe Block reached its zenith, with streets like Zhongjie, Dianji Bay, Xiaozhu Alley, Yanzuolong, Gaozuolong, Puxie Alley, and others bustling with a mix of businesses and residential areas, reflecting its vibrant commercial and residential character.
Yuehe Block is structured around the parallel layout of “Three Rivers and Three Streets.” This layout comprises the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Outer Yuehe River, and the Inner Yuehe River, all running essentially parallel and converging near the Beili Bridge. The streets of Zhongjilu, Tanlong, and Xiushui Doujie, situated close to the canal and the city, emerged as bustling commercial areas. The labyrinthine alleys and lanes within the block, along with the narrow waterways and old residences, authentically capture the charm of a traditional water town.
In addition to preserving the traditional charm of Jiangnan water towns, Yuehe Historic Block is home to numerous buildings and sites of historical and cultural significance. Landmarks such as the Jiangxi Guild Hall, Jinyu Academy, Dachang Pawnshop, Jiahe Water Inn, Gaogongsheng Soy Sauce Garden, and Caishen Temple, along with many old-brand businesses, including the Dragon Boat Folk Culture Experience Hall and the Zongzi Cultural Museum, showcase the rich history and culture of the Jiaxing region.
