Shuxiang Temple (殊像寺), named after its enshrinement of Manjushri Bodhisattva, is located in Xinfang Village, Taihuai Town, Wutai County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. The temple faces the picturesque Fanyan Mountain, creating a serene and beautiful setting. Its history dates back to the early Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD), when it was first established. The temple was rebuilt during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and again in 1325 during the Yuan Dynasty. However, it suffered significant damage from a fire. It was reconstructed once more in 1496 during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Hongzhi and underwent further renovations during the Wanli period (1573-1620). Today, Shuxiang Temple is one of the five major Zen temples of Mount Wutai, alongside Xiantong Temple, Tayuan Temple, Pusading, and Luohou Mountain.
The temple’s most notable structure is the Manjushri Pavilion, also known as the Grand Hall. The existing hall, built in 1489 under the guidance of Chan Master Tielinguo, features five bays in width and three bays in depth, topped with a nine-ridge hip-and-gable roof. This hall is the largest temple structure in the central area of Taihuai. Inside, a magnificent statue of Manjushri riding a lion, nearly ten meters tall, dominates the central altar. This statue is the tallest representation of Manjushri among the various temples in Wutai Mountain. Many ethnic groups in Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, and Tibet refer to this statue as the “Manjushri of Shuxiang Temple,” known for its significance in local lore.
Legend has it that the statue was crafted to reflect the true form of Manjushri Bodhisattva, adding to its mystique. Furthermore, the walls of the Grand Hall feature a stunning clay relief mural depicting the story of “The Five Hundred Arhats Crossing the River.” This colorful sculpture spans 48 meters in length and 6.8 meters in height, covering an area of 326.4 square meters, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
Shuxiang Temple not only serves as a vital site for Buddhist worship but also stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. Its tranquil surroundings, combined with its architectural grandeur and artistic treasures, make it a must-visit destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. Visitors to Shuxiang Temple can appreciate both the spiritual significance and the breathtaking beauty of this ancient temple.
