Tiandu Peak (Heavenly Capital Peak) in Huangshan Mountain

Tiandu Peak In Huangshan Mountain

Tiandu Peak (天都峰), located in the southeastern part of Huangshan Mountain, is one of the 36 major peaks of this famous range. Standing at an elevation of 1,810 meters, it faces Lotus Peak to the west and connects to Bowl Peak to the east. Historically known as “The Capital of Immortals,” Tiandu Peak earned its name, which means “Heavenly Capital Peak,” due to its awe-inspiring height and majestic appearance. It is renowned for its steep, rugged cliffs and breathtaking views, making it one of the most magnificent peaks in the Huangshan range. Along with Lotus Peak and Bright Summit, Tiandu Peak is considered one of the three main peaks of Huangshan.

In ancient times, Tiandu Peak was almost impossible to climb due to the absence of a clear path. According to historical records, a Tang Dynasty monk named Daoyun was the first to reach the summit by scaling the cliffs on the eastern side, overcoming countless dangers along the way. His ascent marked the first recorded instance of anyone reaching the top of Tiandu Peak.

The peak is home to many natural wonders. The summit suddenly opens up to a flat area, where a stone chamber large enough to accommodate dozens of people is embedded in the cliff. Outside this chamber is a massive rock known as “The Immortal Holds the Gate,” resembling a drunken immortal reclining against the stone. Other notable sights include Immortal Peach Rock, the Heavenly Ladder, and Carp’s Back—a narrow ridge that challenges even the bravest hikers. The peak is also adorned with ancient stone inscriptions, including the famous “Reaching the Summit.” From the top of Wenfeng Head, one can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, with distant clouds merging with the peaks and rivers appearing as thin lines in the landscape below. When mist and clouds rise, the scene transforms into a heavenly realm, as if one has entered a mystical paradise.

In 1937, a stone path was constructed, leading to the summit of Tiandu Peak. This trail, approximately three kilometers long, includes 1,564 steps, 194 stone railings, and 600 meters of iron chains, ensuring the safety of climbers. In 1983, a stonemason team from Wenling, Zhejiang, carved out a new path from the southern side of Tiandu’s midsection to the summit, adding another 1,050 meters and 2,175 steps. This route offers stunning views and has added many new attractions to Huangshan’s already impressive landscape.
