The Aizhai Bridge (矮寨大桥), located in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan Province, China, is a remarkable feat of engineering and a vital transportation link in the region. Spanning the breathtaking Dehang Grand Canyon, it serves as a key component of the road network in the northwest part of Jishou City and is part of the Baotou–Maoming Expressway (National Highway G65). Construction began on October 28, 2007, and the main bridge was completed on August 20, 2011. The Aizhai Bridge has set four world records, significantly improving transportation between Hunan and Chongqing provinces.
The bridge extends from the Potou Tunnel in the west, crosses the Dehang Grand Canyon, and reaches the Aizhai No. 3 Tunnel in the east. It measures a total length of 1,779 meters, with the main bridge spanning 1,414 meters. Designed as a dual four-lane expressway, it accommodates a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. The bridge is adorned with nearly 2,000 colorful lights, including over 200 on the main cable, 1,668 on the steel beams, and 80 on the towers, enhancing its visual appeal, especially at night.
The Aizhai Bridge is not only majestic but also poses significant engineering challenges due to its steep canyon surroundings, often shrouded in mist. Although visitors cannot walk directly on the bridge since it is part of a high-speed roadway, they can enjoy breathtaking views by taking a sightseeing bus or elevator to designated viewing platforms nearby. These platforms provide an excellent vantage point to appreciate the grandeur of the bridge against the stunning natural backdrop of the canyon.
