The Daxing’anling May 6 Fire Memorial Museum (大兴安岭“五·六”火灾纪念馆) was established to reflect on and commemorate the devastating forest fire that occurred on May 6, 1987, in the Daxing’anling region of Heilongjiang Province. The museum officially opened on October 22, 1988, and underwent renovations and expansions in 2006, now covering an area of 6,000 square meters.
The museum features 12 exhibition halls, including themed areas such as “Fire Melting the City” and “The Battle of Daxing’anling,” alongside a high-tech immersive cinema that utilizes sound, light, and projection technology. Through a variety of display methods, including photographs, scenes, sculptures, models, and immersive films, the museum presents a vivid and comprehensive account of the events surrounding the fire. It showcases the entire process from ignition to disaster, firefighting efforts, rescue operations, post-fire recovery, and ecological restoration.
On that fateful day, multiple forestry bureaus in the region, including Xilinqi, Tuanqiang, Amur, and Tahe, experienced simultaneous fires, resulting in the most severe forest fire since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Preliminary statistics indicate that over 1 million hectares were burned, nearly 70% of which was forest land. The fire destroyed approximately 614,000 square meters of buildings, including 400,000 square meters of residential housing. It also damaged wood storage facilities, nine forest farms, and resulted in significant losses in equipment and agricultural resources.
More than 50,000 people were affected, with 193 fatalities and 226 injuries recorded. The Daxing’anling May 6 Fire Memorial Museum serves as a solemn reminder of this tragic event and highlights the importance of fire safety and ecological conservation.
