Nankun Mountain National Forest Park (南昆山国家森林公园) covers approximately 124 square kilometers, with an average elevation of 500 meters and its highest peak, Tiantang Peak, reaching 1,228 meters. Situated near the Tropic of Cancer, Nankun Mountain is one of the few summer resorts in Guangdong Province, often referred to as the “Oasis on the Tropic of Cancer.”
The park is renowned for its stunning natural features, including unique pines, strange rocks, and tranquil lakes, boasting 36 remarkable scenic spots. However, the distances between some attractions can be significant, making it challenging for visitors to see everything in one trip, even by car. Key highlights for most tourists include Guanyin Pond, Tiantang Peak, Shihe Marvel, and Chuanlong Waterfall.
With its high mountains and dense forests, Nankun Mountain offers diverse plant species and ever-changing seasonal landscapes. In March, visitors can enjoy the vibrant rhododendron blossoms at Tiantang Peak. Beyond sightseeing, the park also offers exciting activities like river rafting, delicious local cuisine, and the chance to savor authentic Nankun Mountain Mao Tea.

Highlights of Nankun Mountain

Upon entering from the southwest gate of Nankun Mountain National Forest Park, visitors can reach Guanyin Pond, located about four kilometers west of Nankun Mountain Town. This scenic area features a mountain stream with three cascading waterfalls. Behind the lower waterfall, there’s a white stone that resembles Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, sitting quietly and observing the emerald waters below. Visitors can catch glimpses of this stone Guanyin through the water curtain, giving the pond its name.
Exiting Guanyin Pond leads to Nankun Mountain Town, the most bustling area in the region. The town is small, easily navigable on foot within about ten minutes, and lined with small hotels and restaurants, along with numerous shops selling local products and mountain goods.

The Shihe Scenic Area, located about a kilometer from the parking lot, is one of the most picturesque spots in Nankun Mountain. Here, a long stream flows around uniquely shaped boulders, forming various tranquil pools of clear green water, creating a serene atmosphere.
Continuing south from Shihe Scenic Area, visitors will find a well-maintained stone staircase that leads through a bamboo grove to the impressive Chuanlong Waterfall. The mountain spring emerges from a cave resembling a dragon’s head, cascading dramatically into a deep pool below, making for a breathtaking sight. The waterfall’s rock face is inscribed with the words “Chuanlong Gorge” by the calligrapher Qin Aosheng, adding to the area’s charm.
