Panshan Mountain (盘山, Mount Pan), located to the west of Jixian County, is a renowned mountain in the Beijing–Tianjin area. Legend has it that during the late Eastern Han Dynasty, the scholar Tian Chou and his clan sought refuge on the mountain. In the year 207 AD, when Cao Cao led his army on a northern expedition against the Wuhuan, Tian Chou offered his services as a guide, contributing significantly to the victory. Despite being offered rewards by Cao Cao, Tian Chou chose to remain on the mountain, and the people began to refer to it as Tian Panshan, eventually shortening it to Panshan Mountain.
The history of Panshan dates back to the Han Dynasty, flourished during the Tang Dynasty, and reached its peak during the Qing Dynasty. Over time, the mountain hosted 72 temples and 13 exquisite pagodas. Among its treasures was the Royal Garden – Jingji Mountain Resort. Renowned as the “Eastern Wutai Mountain” in the Buddhist community during the Tang Dynasty, it gained further fame during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty as the “Number One Mountain in the East of the Capital.” In the early years of the Republic of China, Panshan was listed alongside Tai Mountain, West Lake, and the Forbidden City as one of China’s fifteen major attractions.
Unfortunately, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Panshan served as one of the revolutionary bases in eastern Hebei. The brutal “Three Alls Policy” implemented by the Japanese led to the destruction of numerous Buddhist temples and other cultural sites on Panshan.
