Bailuzhou Park – The Largest Park in Xiamen

Bailuzhou Park Xiamen

Bailuzhou Park, also known as Egret Island Park (白鹭洲公园), is the largest open public square park in Xiamen, centered around the Music Fountain Square and featuring the Egret Goddess statue and Pigeon Square. The park is divided into two main sections: the Central Park and the West Park.

The Central Park, covering an area of 59,000 square meters, was opened in 1995. It is designed with the theme of allowing visitors to return to nature and enjoy its scenic beauty. The Egret Goddess statue, which is 13.6 meters tall, stands at the southern part of the park near the yacht dock. The statue, a symbol of Xiamen, depicts a graceful goddess serenely kneeling on a giant rock, combing her long hair with a small egret perched on her shoulder.

The West Park, spanning 100,000 square meters, was completed in 1997 to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to China. It features the Reunification Stone, zodiac stone pillars, Music Fountain Square, and an open-air music square. Visitors interested in seeing the music fountain should note that it operates on weekends and public holidays, typically from 7 PM to 9 PM.

Bailuzhou Park is home to 400 pigeons imported from the Netherlands. These pigeons are fed twice daily, and visitors can enjoy interacting with them by bringing their own grains to feed the birds, creating a delightful and engaging experience. Additionally, the park serves as a shopping and entertainment hub, housing various attractions such as a calligraphy and painting art center, which includes a painting academy, art gallery, calligraphy corridor, crystal gift shops, dragon wood carvings, and a bonsai world. The park also features a bowling alley, seafood restaurants, a football club, and nightclubs, providing a wide range of entertainment options.

The park also encompasses Yundang Lake, which was originally connected to the sea. In the 1970s, land reclamation projects separated the lake from the sea by constructing the West Embankment from Fuyi to Dongdu. This turned Yundang Harbor into an inland lake with a water area of 1.7 square kilometers. Bailuzhou Park is situated on the raised land within this lake. Historically, Yundang Harbor was lined with fishing boats that returned to the harbor each night, creating a picturesque scene of boat lights reflecting on the water. The construction of the West Embankment ended this nightly spectacle, but the park still offers beautiful landscapes and a serene environment for visitors.
