bazi bridge shaoxing

Bazi Bridge (八字桥, Baziqiao), located in Shaoxing, has a length of 28 meters, a width of 3.5 meters, and a height of 5 meters. It was originally constructed during the Jia Tai period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1201-1204). The name “Bazi” (八字) comes from the shape of the bridge, resembling the Chinese character “八” (eight), as the two bridges are set diagonally to each other. Legend has it that the indentations on the bridge railings were formed by children kicking them while watching wedding processions.

The bridge, made of stone beams, spans the convergence of three waterways and consists of a main bridge and auxiliary bridge, with a total of four sets of steps arranged in a four-way slope design. This innovative design effectively solved the transportation challenges posed by the complex terrain of the area, showcasing the ingenuity and wisdom of ancient builders.

Surrounded by a wealth of historic architecture and scenic spots like Jishan River, Bazi Bridge allows visitors to experience the water-town charm and rich cultural heritage of Shaoxing. Together with other ancient bridges such as Guangxiang Bridge, Guangning Bridge, Sulong Bridge, and Taiping Bridge, Bazi Bridge forms part of the unique symbol of Shaoxing’s historical and cultural significance.

Today, the area around Bazi Bridge retains its rustic charm, devoid of commercial atmosphere and bustling tourist crowds, making it an ideal place to immerse oneself in the unhurried pace of local life. On rainy days, the damp stone-paved roads add to the ambiance, fulfilling visitors’ imaginations of life in the Jiangnan region. Photography enthusiasts often capture captivating scenes, reflecting the timeless beauty of the surroundings.
