Beihong Village – A Paradise Untouched by Modern Civilization

Beihong Village, Mohe

Beihong Village (北红村), originally known as Dacaodianzi Village, is located in the northeastern part of Mohe City, Heilongjiang Province, making it the northernmost village-level administrative area in China. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, it features the Heilong River flowing from west to east, creating a serene environment far from urban noise. The village has a population of approximately 320 residents, with over 40% being descendants of Russian settlers.

The village began to form with the establishment of gold mines in the late Qing Dynasty. During this period, Dacaodianzi attracted settlers, primarily hunters and Chinese farmers who came to fish and farm after working in the gold mines. Many Russian women married into the local population, while impoverished Chinese farmers sought opportunities across the river. In the Cultural Revolution, Dacaodianzi was renamed Beihong Village.

Nestled within the northernmost range of the Greater Khingan Mountains, Beihong Village is surrounded by untouched, pristine forests. The area is characterized by dense trees, wild fruits, and various small animals such as wild boars, roe deer, and snow hares. To navigate the wilderness, it is advisable to have a local guide, as it is easy to get lost in the vast forest. The sounds of chirping birds and buzzing insects create a symphony of nature, and during late summer, visitors can pick wild fruits, mushrooms, and wood ear mushrooms, or search for precious herbs like wild ganoderma.

The village also boasts vast expanses of grasslands and farmland, dotted with countless unnamed flowers among the lush green grass. Walking along the pebble-strewn riverbank and listening to the whispers of the wind and the gentle flow of water evokes a sense of being in a paradise untouched by modern civilization.
