Cantonese Opera Art Museum

The Cantonese Opera Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆), officially opened on June 9, 2016, is a vibrant cultural institution covering an area of 17,200 square meters, strategically located along the Litchi Bay Waterway. The museum is divided into two main sections: the southern bank and the northern bank. The southern bank features permanent exhibition halls, thematic exhibition spaces, a theater, and landscaped gardens. In contrast, the northern bank focuses on the heritage and preservation of Cantonese opera.

With a collection of 5,086 items, the museum houses significant artifacts and artworks related to Cantonese opera. This traditional performance art, originally referred to as “Guangdong Daxie,” is widely popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, and Macau. It has also spread to various overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, America, Oceania, and Europe.

The museum features a beautifully landscaped garden surrounding the central Wansha Lake, integrating six courtyard spaces that provide a serene setting for visitors. The highlight is the water stage, Guangfu Stage, which regularly hosts live Cantonese opera and song performances, showcasing the unique characteristics of this artistic form.

The main exhibition hall offers a comprehensive overview of the history, artistic features, organizational structures, and significant influence of Cantonese opera both domestically and internationally. This exhibition aims to educate visitors about the evolution of the art form and its cultural importance.

Additionally, the themed exhibition hall hosts various temporary exhibitions related to Cantonese opera, promoting ongoing engagement and interest in this traditional art form. The museum’s boutique theater, with 237 seats and advanced sound and lighting systems, is designed for high-quality Cantonese opera performances, making it a center for cultural exchange and artistic presentation.
