East Lake, Wuhan – A Premier Scenic Destination

Tingtao Scenic Area stands as a cornerstone of the East Lake scenic region, nestled along the northwest shore of Guozheng Lake, the largest lake in East Lake. Initially a private garden owned by Zhou Cangbai, a prominent ethnic capitalist, known as “Haiguang Farm,” it was the first area of East Lake opened to the public. The area features prominent attractions such as Xingyin Pavilion, Qu Yuan Memorial Hall, Canglang Pavilion, Changtian Tower, Lu Xun Square, Jiunv Dun, Huguang Pavilion, Chufeng Garden, and the largest inland beach in China, East Lake Yihai Beach. This area is a narrow and elongated peninsula, offering a serene retreat.

Moshan, a vital part of the nationally acclaimed East Lake Scenic Area, is encompassed by water on three sides, with six picturesque peaks adorning its landscape. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich Chu cultural heritage (Moshan Chu City), it annually welcomes over a million visitors from home and abroad, standing as one of Wuhan’s most enchanting tourism and leisure destinations. Its exquisite mountains and waters, diverse flora, unique garden landscapes, and deep Chu cultural essence highlight Moshan’s distinctive charm. With ample rainfall and sunlight, Moshan hosts over 250 species of ornamental trees, totaling more than two million trees, earning it the reputation of Wuhan’s “green treasure trove” (East Lake Cherry Blossom Garden). The mystery of the millennium-old Moshan Tree Falling Puzzle, set amidst a labyrinthine kilometer of paths, adds a layer of mystique to the East Lake area.

The Luohong Area is renowned for its picturesque natural surroundings and historical significance. Dominated by the campus of Wuhan University, this area is enveloped by lush forests and boasts an array of elegant traditional buildings scattered among cherry blossoms, osmanthus, and other flowering trees, attracting countless visitors. The serene environment of Hong Mountain adds to the area’s allure, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city. A notable historical site here is Drum Rack Mountain, which, according to legend, was the location where King Zhuang of Chu, during the Warring States period, used a drum to command his troops in battle against the Yue. During one encounter, an arrow from the enemy struck the drum rack, giving the mountain its name.

Located to the north of the Luohong Area, the Baima Scenic Area features the famed Baima Isle. This site is steeped in historical significance, with a story dating back to the Battle of Red Cliffs in 208 AD. After the battle, the strategist Lu Su returned to Xiakou on horseback, but his horse became mired in the mud and died. Overcome with grief, Lu Su buried the horse on the isle, which then became known as Baima Isle, or White Horse Isle.

The Luoyan Area is situated along the eastern section of East Lake, adjacent to the Tuancheng Lake water region and across from the Moshan Scenic Area. This charming area features some of Wuhan’s most treasured ancient trees, with over 30 notable old trees and their surrounding resources, making it the most concentrated and visually captivating collection of historic trees in the city. Visitors can explore tranquil paths under the canopy of these majestic trees, creating a serene and reflective experience amidst nature.

Chuidi Area, also known as Ma’anshan Forest Park, is a prominent scenic spot in the East Lake area. This picturesque park features six natural bays scattered across its landscape and is characterized by 17 peaks, with the highest peak, Ma’anshan, reaching an elevation of 136 meters. The park’s lush forests cover 80% of the area, offering a verdant escape from the city. The area is rich in historical lore, with legends connecting famous figures such as Jiang Taigong, King Zhuang of Chu, Zhao Zilong, and Zhu Yuanzhang to the region. Lingbo Gate Pier, located near Wuhan University’s Lingbo Gate, is a popular attraction for both locals and visitors. The picturesque wooden pier stretches out into East Lake, offering stunning panoramic views of the lake’s shimmering waters and the surrounding lush hills. Moshan Chu City, established in July 1992, serves as the entrance to the Chu Cultural Tourist Area at East Lake’s Moshan Scenic Area. This grand historical site is designed to evoke the grandeur of ancient Chu culture. The city wall stands 23.4 meters high and 11 meters wide, encompassing a length of 117 meters. It features a range of traditional architectural elements, including Water Gate, Land Gate, City Wall, Watch Tower, Arrow Tower, and Beacon Tower. The Land Gate’s central archway is 3.9 meters wide, flanked by two smaller arches, each 1.8 meters wide. Constructed from Da Ye red sandstone, the walls are inscribed with “Chu City” in oracle bone script by renowned modern historian and epigraphist Hu Houxuan, while the “荆楚雄风 (Jingchu Heroic Spirit)” plaque was calligraphed by famous artist Li Duo. The site offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the Chu Kingdom.

East Lake Cherry Blossom Garden is celebrated as one of the world’s top cherry blossom destinations, alongside Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Garden in Japan and Washington, D.C.’s Cherry Blossom Festival in the United States. The Cherry Blossom Garden, along with Wuhan University’s cherry blossoms, contributes to Wuhan’s reputation as one of the world’s premier cherry blossom capitals. Each year, from March to April, the Cherry Blossom Festival draws thousands of visitors to witness the breathtaking bloom of cherry blossoms, creating a magical landscape of pink and white flowers that enchants and delights.

East Lake Plum Blossom Garden is one of China’s Four Great Plum Blossom Gardens, alongside Nanjing’s Plum Blossom Hill, Shanghai’s Dianshan Lake Plum Blossom Garden, and Wuxi’s Plum Blossom Garden. As the city flower of Wuhan, the plum blossom holds significant cultural value. Each year, from February to March, the garden hosts the annual Plum Blossom Festival, where visitors can enjoy the breathtaking sight of over 30,000 plum trees in full bloom. The festival attracts thousands of visitors, offering a vibrant display of delicate pink and white blossoms against the backdrop of East Lake’s serene waters.

East Lake Bird Watching Forest is a premier destination for bird enthusiasts and researchers. Home to over 200 species of rare and exotic birds, with a total of more than 8,000 individual birds, this expansive forest provides an exceptional opportunity for birdwatching and scientific research. The forest is a sanctuary for over 20 species of nationally protected birds, including the Red-crowned Crane, Golden Eagle, Oriental Stork, and Green Peafowl. It also features international species such as the Macaw, Flamingo, and African Pelican. Wuhan Happy Valley is a major amusement park located at 196 Happy Valley Avenue, East Lake Ecological Tourism Scenic Area. Covering approximately 3,167 acres, it is the fifth and first Happy Valley theme park in Central China developed by OCT Group, following successful parks in Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai. Wuhan Happy Valley offers a diverse range of attractions, including thrilling rides, entertaining shows, and themed zones. It features a mix of entertainment options for visitors of all ages, from exhilarating roller coasters to family-friendly attractions, providing a fun and exciting experience for everyone.

• Lotus Flower Festival (June to July): During June and July, the East Lake Lotus Flower Festival highlights the vibrant lotus flowers that bloom around the lake. Visitors can enjoy picturesque lotus ponds and partake in various cultural events.
