Perched atop the northwest corner of the island’s promontory, the Huaniao Lighthouse stands as a beacon of maritime safety and architectural splendor. Positioned at 30 degrees 51 minutes north latitude and 122 degrees 40 minutes east longitude, this lighthouse holds significant historical and geographical importance. Often hailed as the “First Lighthouse in the Far East,” its imposing cylindrical structure rises to a height of 16.5 meters. The lower portion, constructed of white concrete bricks, supports the upper portion made of black iron plates. Originally funded by the British and constructed with labor recruited from Shanghai, the lighthouse was completed in 1870. Throughout its history, it has undergone renovations, including significant repairs in 1916. Today, the Huaniao Lighthouse is not only a vital navigational aid but also a beloved subject for photographers, with its breathtaking vistas earning comparisons to the scenic landscapes of Santorini.

Standing tall on the northern cliffs of Huaniao Mountain, the Buddha’s Hand Rock, also known as Wuzhi Rock, resembles a hand with distinct fingers. Its proximity to nearby temples enhances its allure, as it evokes the image of a solitary hand raised in a Buddhist gesture of inquiry. This natural wonder serves as an ideal vantage point for witnessing the sunrise over the island. As the first rays of dawn illuminate the horizon, the entire island gradually awakens, and fishermen prepare to set out to sea, offering a picturesque scene of simplicity and tranquility. Visitors are encouraged to arrive before 5 a.m. to fully appreciate the mesmerizing spectacle.

The bioluminescent sea, also known as “Blue Tears,” presents a mesmerizing phenomenon where noctiluca scintillans, a type of bioluminescent algae, congregates on the water’s surface, emitting a captivating blue glow upon agitation by the waves. During low tide, these luminous algae may accumulate on the shoreline, sparkling in response to the gentlest disturbances. The best chances to witness the bioluminescent sea occur between May and August, particularly on clear summer nights. Visitors can venture to the beaches of Nan’ao (南岙沙滩) or the docks of Beiao (北岙码头) to marvel at this enchanting natural spectacle under the veil of darkness.
