Shiyan, located in the heart of the Western Hubei Ecological and Cultural Tourism Circle, is renowned for its three world-class attractions: Wudang Mountain, the Danjiangkou Reservoir, and its status as a major automotive hub with the headquarters of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, one of China’s top commercial vehicle manufacturers. These landmarks, symbolized by “Wudang Mountain,” “Danjiang Water,” and “Auto City,” shine globally.

Shiyan boasts a rich history and is a significant cradle of Chinese civilization. It is bordered by the ancient city of Xiangyang to the east, the Daba Mountains to the south, Ankang of southern Shaanxi to the west, and the ancient Qinling Mountains to the north, with the Han River running from west to east across the region. Historically, Shiyan was part of the Jiao and Yong states during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, belonged to the Chu state during the Warring States period, and was part of the Hanzhong Commandery during the Qin and Han dynasties. In the Eastern Han and Wei periods, it was part of Xixi County. During the Tang and Song dynasties, it belonged to Wudang County in the Yunjun Prefecture. The modern city developed during the Qing Dynasty, named Shiyan due to the construction of ten dams on the Baier and Jiang Rivers for irrigation.
