The Hundred Rooms Building (百间楼), with a history of over 400 years, dates back to the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. Legend has it that it was constructed by Dong Fen, the Minister of Rites in the Ming Dynasty, for the female family members and servants. It earned its name “Hundred Rooms Building” due to its construction of over a hundred rooms along the riverbanks, connected by a long stone bridge spanning the river.
Located on the eastern side of Nanxun Ancient Town, the Hundred Rooms Building stretches along the riverbank for about 400 meters. Its distinct features include black tiles, white walls, and green willows, all winding alongside the river. The building’s stone embankment is neatly constructed, with riverbanks facilitating the landing and embarking of residents, boatmen, and merchants, as well as the transportation of goods.
The architecture of the Hundred Rooms Building varies, predominantly featuring arcade-style structures with a mix of full and half arcades, intertwined with corridors. The incorporation of stone-gate style buildings adds to its diverse architectural forms. The building’s sealed firewall exhibits triple eaves horsehead walls and pipa-shaped gables, creating a playful yet elegant aesthetic. Furthermore, the interposition of gateways between the buildings draws people’s gaze deeper into the complex. Preserving the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty while embodying the lingering charm of the Qing Dynasty, the Hundred Rooms Building exemplifies the quintessential architectural style of the Jiangnan water town.
Amidst the houses of the Hundred Room Building, one can often witness residents engaging in daily activities such as washing clothes and drying crops, adding to the vibrant atmosphere and offering a glimpse into the unique charm of life in the Jiangnan water town.
