Jinan City Museum

The Jinan City Museum (济南市博物馆), established in December 1958 and relocated to a new building in 1997, is a prominent cultural institution in Jinan, Shandong Province. Spanning an area of 8,500 square meters with a building space of 6,300 square meters, the museum features 2,400 square meters of exhibition space across two floors. The first floor houses four exhibition halls: “Bird Photographs,” “Calligraphy and Painting,” “Porcelain,” and “Inkstones.” On the second floor, there are four interconnected exhibition halls showcasing Buddhist statues and small-scale artifacts.

The museum boasts a collection of over 20,000 cultural relics, including more than 2,000 rare books (rare editions), three national-level artifacts, 59 first-level artifacts, and over a thousand third-level and above artifacts. Among its treasures are some of China’s most precious cultural relics, such as a Neolithic “Spiral Carved Ivory Comb,” a Shang Dynasty bronze ge with gold inlay, a Spring and Autumn Period “Bronze Gui Vessel of Lu Bu,” a Warring States jade spoon, and a Han Dynasty “Painted Terracotta Acrobatics Figurine” unearthed from an early Western Han tomb.

Notable artifacts also include a Tang Dynasty stone-carved immortal phoenix carriage, gold and silver slip-off mirrors, Tongguan kiln rhinoceros-shaped porcelain pillows from the Tang Dynasty, Tang Tri-colored glazed camels, a Song Dynasty Diyangyu kiln carved flower porcelain pillow, a Yuan Dynasty ruby red jade spring vase, a Ming Dynasty Xuande blue and white lotus-themed large plate, a Qing Dynasty Kangxi five-colored human figure vase, and a Qing Dynasty Qianlong imperial poem “Yutian Caiyu Map” jade mountain.

Moreover, the museum houses a significant collection of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, particularly from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, featuring works by prominent artists such as Guo Xi of the Northern Song Guo Xi school, Sheng Mao’s “Autumn Brook Fishing Picture” in the Yuan Dynasty, Ni Zan’s “Gao Ke Bamboo and Stone Picture” among the “Four Great Families of the Yuan Dynasty,” Wang Wei’s “Flute Playing under the Moon Picture,” Lin Liang’s “Wild Geese Playing in the Reed Picture,” Zhang Lu’s “Viewing the Moon in Tongyin Picture,” Zhou Chen’s “Snow Day Searching for Hidden Picture,” Chen Hongshou’s “Damour Picture,” Lan Ying’s “Landscape Screen,” Zhang Chong’s “Eight Immortals Drinking Picture,” and many others.
