Lianhua Peak (Lotus Peak, 莲花峰), standing at an impressive elevation of 1,864.8 meters, is the highest peak in the Huangshan Mountain range and the foremost among the 36 major peaks. It is strategically located between the hiking trail from Yuping Pavilion to Aoyufeng. The ascent to Lotus Peak involves a winding path of approximately 5 kilometers, with a relative elevation gain of about 110 meters. In 1997, a new 500-meter trail was established in Lotus Valley, featuring steps, wooden bridges, and viewing platforms to enhance accessibility and safety for visitors.
Natural Beauty and Unique Features
Lotus Peak is renowned for its steep and majestic stature, resembling a blooming lotus flower with its main peak standing tall while smaller peaks encircle it. This picturesque formation inspired its name, symbolizing a lotus that has just unfurled its petals toward the sky. The journey to the summit begins on a gentle incline known as “Lotus Stem,” leading climbers through four stone caves referred to as “Lotus Holes” by ancient travelers. These caves rise sharply, creating a dramatic ascent as visitors climb through, akin to “ants emerging from the flower’s calyx.”
Along the path, hikers are treated to breathtaking views, with cliff walls adorned with ancient inscriptions such as “真好造化 Truly a Marvel of Nature,” “非人间也 Not of This World,” “名不虚传 A Name Not in Vain,” and “天海奇观 A Spectacle of the Heavenly Sea.” At the foot of Lotus Peak lie additional attractions, including Lotus Cave and Lotus Spring, which add to the area’s enchanting scenery.
Cultural Significance of Locks
One of the peak’s most fascinating sights is the collection of locks attached to iron chains around the summit. These locks are often placed by young couples or married partners, symbolizing their eternal bond and commitment. The tradition of attaching “love locks” has become a popular custom at Huangshan, not only found at the summit but also on various railings and chains throughout the area.
Visitors often see two locks entwined, known as “Heart Locks,” which signify a couple’s love. Additionally, there are larger, interconnected locks called “Family Portrait Locks,” symbolizing family unity, and special “Longevity Locks” tied by family members for their children. This practice has transformed Lotus Peak into a romantic and culturally significant destination, blending natural beauty with heartfelt human expressions.
