Highlights of Lord Bao Park

Lord Bao Memorial Temple

Lord Bao Park Hefei 1

The Lord Bao Memorial Temple is located on Xianghua Hill in Baohe Park. Originally a Buddhist site in the southern part of the city, it served as the childhood study place of Bao Zheng. The temple complex includes the main hall, east and west wing rooms, Lianquan Well, Liufang Pavilion, Huilan Pavilion, a wax museum depicting the life of Lord Bao, as well as extensive gardens and a large body of water.

In the main hall, a grand statue of Lord Bao, standing eight feet tall, is seated with his loyal subordinates – Wang Chao, Ma Han, Zhang Long, and Zhao Hu – standing on either side. The hall also displays the three famous execution guillotines: the Dragon, Tiger, and Dog. To the east of the temple, the six-sided pavilion houses the ancient “廉泉 Lianquan” well, its edge deeply worn by centuries of rope friction. The Liufang Pavilion to the west marks the spot where Lord Bao studied and played as a child. The Huilan Pavilion uses the art form of “瓯塑 Ou Su” (ceramic sculpting) to vividly depict the true life of Lord Bao.

Lord Bao’s Tomb

Lord Bao Park Hefei 2

The Tomb of Lord Bao, posthumously titled “Xiaosu,” is the final resting place of Bao Zheng, his wife, and their descendants. Covering three hectares, it is one of the most well-preserved ancient tombs of a notable official in China. The tomb complex is constructed following the burial customs of a second-rank official from the Song Dynasty. Surrounded by evergreen pines and cypresses, the atmosphere of the cemetery is solemn and serene. The tomb itself is shaped like an overturned bucket and contains Lord Bao’s epitaph and a coffin made of precious Phoebe zhennan wood, which holds his remains.

Qingfeng Pavilion

Lord Bao Park Hefei 4

Qingfeng Pavilion is located between Lord Bao’s Tomb to the east and the Lord Bao Memorial Temple to the west, covering an area of 2.2 hectares. The pavilion’s main structure is a 42-meter-high tower designed in the Song Dynasty style, featuring five visible and four hidden floors, totaling nine levels. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Hefei city and the picturesque landscape of Lord Bao Park.

The pavilion is dedicated to the theme of “Cultural Bao Zheng,” highlighting the famous judge’s legacy through high-quality murals and carvings. The multimedia exhibition hall uses advanced technology to vividly interpret the culture and legendary stories of Lord Bao. Inside the pavilion, there is a stage where various traditional opera performances based on Lord Bao’s life are held periodically, inviting visitors to participate and enhancing the interactive experience of the park.

Fuzhuang Pavilion

Lord Bao Park Hefei 3

Fuzhuang Pavilion is located on the large eastern island of Baohe Park. The pavilion gets its name from its appearance, as it resembles a willow leaf floating on the water, and the buildings on the island resemble an ancient village. The main entrance features white walls and black tiles, with a plaque inscribed with the name “浮庄 Fuzhuang,” written by General Zhang Aiping, a former State Councilor and Minister of National Defense.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a bronze statue of Bao Zhaolong, the father of Bao Yugang, a 28th-generation direct descendant of Bao Zheng and a world-renowned shipping magnate. The architecture on the island draws inspiration from the garden styles of Suzhou, Yangzhou, and Anhui, harmoniously integrating with the surrounding water. The design reflects the artistic features of Jiangnan gardens and Hui-style architecture, creating a tranquil and aesthetically pleasing environment.
