Moon Hill (月亮山), located at the end of the Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Area in Yangshuo County, is a captivating natural landmark renowned for its serene and picturesque beauty. The mountain is distinguished by a striking natural archway at its peak, which resembles a crescent moon when viewed from a distance, giving the site its evocative name. The hill offers a unique perspective on the changing phases of the moon, visible from various angles along the Moon Viewing Path. Visitors can witness dynamic landscapes as the arch creates the illusion of a full moon, crescent moon, or a new moon, all within a few minutes.
To reach the Moon Cave, visitors can follow a steep path with over 800 steps. This cave, an impressive natural formation, measures around 50 meters in both height and width, though the mountain walls are only a few meters thick. The cave’s interior features smooth walls and a ceiling adorned with an array of stalactites, resembling the Jade Rabbit and Wu Gang from lunar legends. On clear days, the cave frames a breathtaking view of the blue sky and white clouds, resembling a circular mirror perched on the mountaintop.
Moon Hill is also known for being one of Yangshuo’s earliest and most attractive natural climbing venues. The climbing area is situated at the top of the hill, accessible via a stone path that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to ascend. The climbing routes, totaling 14 with well-placed expansion bolts, offer various challenges. Eight routes are on the vertical walls, two are positioned on the left and right sides of the arch, and the remaining four transition from the arch to the vertical walls, featuring different angles of inclination.
The surrounding region of Moon Hill is home to over 300 square kilometers of pristine forest, inhabited by minority ethnic groups such as the Shui and Miao. Nearby attractions include Mount Huo and Jiu Niu Ridge. From the summit of Moon Hill, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, meandering streams, lush bamboo forests, and verdant fields, creating a landscape that is both poetically and artistically inspiring.
