Nanchang Zoo (南昌动物园) is located within Chaoyang Park, Nanchang, with a total investment of 198 million RMB and covering an area of 0.52 square kilometers. The zoo began construction on October 1, 2005, and opened to the public in 2011. It boasts a lush environment with over 80% of its area covered in greenery.
The zoo is designed with a layout that reflects the geographical distribution and natural habitats of the animals. It is divided into several distinct zones: the African Zone, American Zone, Australian Zone, Chinese Zone, Aquatic and Amphibian Zone, and the Chinese Herbivores Zone. The zoo is further segmented by the Peach Blossom River, a 3.6-kilometer-long water system that separates the various areas. Twelve bridges, each themed around the Chinese zodiac, connect the different sections of the zoo.
The origins of Nanchang Zoo date back to the early 1950s when it was initially a small animal training troupe managed by the Cultural Bureau, featuring street performers. By 1959, the zoo moved to People’s Park, where it became an animal exhibit section. It officially gained independence in 1987, transforming into a self-contained “park within a park.”
As a medium-sized zoo in a provincial capital, Nanchang Zoo offers a combination of wildlife exhibition, recreation, landscaping, and minor retail services. The zoo houses 107 species of animals. Among these, there are 20 species of first-class protected animals, totaling 87 individuals, including the clouded leopard, Asian elephant, South China tiger, Siberian tiger, golden leopard, and Malayan bear. There are also 24 species of second-class protected animals, with a total of 250 individuals, such as the golden cat, black deer, Ganges monkey, little swan, and red panda. Additionally, the zoo features nine species of imported animals, totaling 14 individuals, including baboons and hippopotamuses.
Nanchang Zoo is equipped with several specialized animal pavilions, such as the Reptile Pavilion, Peacock Pavilion, and Aquatic Animal Pavilion. One of the zoo’s highlights is its large waterfowl lake, spanning over ten acres. This lake is home to more than 50 species of waterfowl, with particularly notable populations of little swans, black swans, red-crowned cranes, and white storks.
