Nanning People’s Park (南宁人民公园, Nanning Renmin Park), also known as Bailong Park (白龙公园), is situated in the northern part of Nanning City and spans over 500,000 square meters. The park is renowned for its picturesque Bailong Lake, covering approximately 70,000 square meters. The lake’s clear blue water adds to its serene and scenic beauty.
The name “Bailong,” meaning “White Dragon,” is derived from a historical anecdote recorded in the Song Dynasty text Xingdi Jisheng by Wang Xiangzhi. According to the account, the famous Song general Di Qing once camped on the nearby Wangxian Slope and observed a group of white goats by the lake that resembled the shape of a dragon. This observation led to the naming of the lake as Bailong Lake. The lake features a small island at its center, connected to the shore by two charming bridges: the Jiuxi Bridge to the west and the Sankong Moon Bridge to the north.
A prominent feature of Nanning People’s Park is the historic Zhenning Fort, a two-story circular fortress built by the old Guangxi military leader Lu Rongting. This fort is situated at the highest point of the park, reached by climbing 141 steps up the Wangxian Slope. The fort houses a German Krupp cannon, manufactured in 1890, which adds to its historical significance. The base of the cannon is adorned with an ancient inscription, and from the fort, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Nanning city, evoking a sense of nostalgia and historical reflection.
In the northeastern corner of the park, on a hillside, stands the majestic Revolutionary Martyrs’ Monument. Established in 1956, this monument honors the revolutionary heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Great Revolution, the Anti-Japanese War, and the Liberation War, contributing to Nanning’s liberation and the establishment of New China. The monument stands 20 meters tall and features architectural elements from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its structure is decorated with white marble, and inscriptions are engraved on its north and south sides. The inscription reads “革命烈士纪念碑 Revolutionary Martyrs’ Monument,” written in bold characters by Chen Manyuan, the first secretary of the Guangxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. On the east and west sides, the monument bears the words “革命烈士永垂不朽 The Revolutionary Martyrs Will Live Forever.”
