Nine Creeks in Misty Forest (九溪烟树), commonly known as “Nine Creeks and Eighteen Streams,” is nestled on the western side of West Lake amid a cluster of mountains. Formed by the convergence of numerous small streams, it takes the shape of a “Y,” originating from Wengjia Mountain below the Yangmei Ridge. As the streams wind their way through Qingwan, Hongfa, Tangjia, Xiaokang, Foshi, Baizhang, Yunqi, Qingtou, and Fangjia, the meandering water eventually flows into the Qiantang River. After rainfall, the trees on the nearby Bajue Mountain are enveloped in mist, creating a picturesque “misty forest” scenery.

A Leisure Day in Nine Creeks
In ancient times, Chinese people often used the number “nine” to symbolize numerous quantities. The term “Eighteen Streams” originally referred to the countless mountain springs and streams in the Longjing area. Therefore, “Eighteen Streams” was a way for ancient people to describe the multitude of mountain springs and streams using a multiple of “nine,” not necessarily meaning only eighteen streams.
The entire Nine Creeks stretch approximately 5.5 kilometers, surrounded by lush trees and vast tea plantations. Strolling along the stream on the shaded paths feels like walking in a painting, providing a serene and enjoyable experience. This area is also a popular destination for family outings, especially during warm weather when both adults and children can be seen playing by the creek. Stepping into the ankle-deep water with sandals brings a refreshing and invigorating sensation.
Nine Creeks in Misty Forest has three entrances: Longjing Village at the upper left of the “Y,” Yangmei Ridge (near Manlongguiyu), and the lower part of Jiuxi Road. The central convergence point, known as “In the Creek,” serves as the heart of Nine Creeks, where attractions like Jiuxi Misty Forest Park, Li’an Temple, waterfalls, and a large stone inscribed with “九溪烟树” (Nine Creeks in Misty Forest) are concentrated. Many visitors take photos with this stone as a memento.

Recommended Routes
Three walking routes are available, each relatively easy to traverse, allowing visitors to choose their preferred entrance:
- Jiuxi Road – In the Creek: This route is popular due to its convenient transportation and well-maintained asphalt road.
- Longjing Village – In the Creek: This path is a flat, unpaved stone road, providing a tranquil and secluded ambiance. Along Longjing Village, several small teahouses offer a relaxing break with a cup of Longjing tea.
- Yangmei Ridge – In the Creek: This route lacks tree cover as it includes an uphill stone road, making it a challenging walk. However, the vicinity of Li’an Temple and a path leading to Hupao (Tiger Run) offer opportunities for tea enjoyment.
The recommended route is Jiuxi Road – In the Creek – Longjing Village. Aside from walking, Jiuxi Road – In the Creek – Yangmei Ridge can be accessed by car, as the park provides parking facilities. However, the road is narrow, and congestion may occur during peak hours.
