Ningbo Old Bund (宁波老外滩), situated on the northern bank of Sanjiangkou (the convergence of Yongjiang River, Fenghua River, and Yuyao River) in Jiangbei District of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, covers an area of nearly 49,000 square meters, serving as the gateway to the ancient city of Ningbo. It was one of China’s four major ports during the Tang Dynasty and served as the starting point for Jianzhen‘s eastward journey. In the Southern Song Dynasty, it was one of China’s three major ports and established the Maritime Trade Office specifically for foreign trade management. After the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing, Ningbo became one of the “Five Ports” opened for foreign trade and officially opened as a treaty port in 1844, 20 years earlier than Shanghai.
Along the riverside, buildings such as foreign consulates, Catholic churches, banks, and ship terminals are lined up, recording the entire history of Ningbo’s opening up. These buildings have a history of at least 100 years. Examples include the former site of the British Consulate built in 1842, the former site of the Patrol House built in 1864, the former site of Zhejiang Customs built in 1865, the Catholic Church built in 1872, the Jesuit Church of Jiangbei built in 1898, the headquarters of the invading Japanese navy built from 1903 to 1908, the Ningbo Post Office built in 1927, and the former site of the Mercantile Bank built in 1930. In addition, there are some residential houses such as the well-known old shop “Hongchangyuan”, the mixed Chinese-Western style mansion “Yanshi Mountain Villa”, and “Zhuzhai Residence”, all of which have a strong European architectural style, contrasting sharply with traditional Chinese residences.
During the day, Ningbo Old Bund is quiet, with a few tourists strolling on the streets, often seeing newlyweds taking wedding photos. At night, the street comes alive with bustling bars playing melodious songs, adding a charming ambiance. Walking along the riverside, admiring the enchanting night scenery of Sanjiangkou, and strolling with loved ones is romantic. In summer, the riverside of Yongjiang River is also a great place to cool off.

The night view of the Old Bund during the New Year is stunning, with festive decorations everywhere, creating a strong New Year atmosphere.
The Old Bund is much quieter compared to the Shanghai Bund. Each shop is beautifully decorated on the outside, but unfortunately, there are hardly any tourists around.
The morning was spent at the nostalgic Old Bund. After walking past the junction of the three rivers, I strolled along the Bund where history seamlessly merges with modernity. The ancient buildings by the riverside have now transformed into bars and Western restaurants.
The riverside buildings are full of charm, glowing with romance under the neon lights.
On a deep autumn night, taking a stroll along the Bund, a gentle breeze comes, and it feels comfortable and relaxing.
Ningbo is a city that is not as bustling and crowded as I had imagined; under the night sky, it is particularly tranquil.
I love the Bund Bridge in Ningbo because it has a spacious walkway. When I reach the center of the bridge, the blue sky and white clouds, the stunning buildings along the Bund, and the Hunhuang River spread out before me like an oil painting.
The nightlife at Ningbo Old Bund is incredibly charming.
It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Tianyi Square to the Old Bund, you can follow the navigation (walking mode). The Old Bund is a street full of bars, it gets pretty lively at night.
It was my second visit to Ningbo this year, and I finally saw the Old Bund at night, especially the century-old church at the entrance. The fountain was turned on, particularly serene and poetic in the rain’s reflection. The whole street has many bars, all waiting for the second half of the European Cup. Taking a stroll along the river, the lights of the buildings were dazzling.
1. The evening skyline is best viewed between the Yuyao Bridge and the Yongjiang Bridge. Those interested can also take a night cruise on the three rivers (Yuyao River, Yong River, Fenghua River). 2. You can walk on the Yuyao Bridge and the view from up there is stunning. Halfway through, there is a small path that leads to the other side, which you can take. 3. Similarly, you can also walk on the Yongjiang Bridge, either starting from there… Read more »
May Holiday crowded and lively. I arrived there at 8:30, but it wasn’t so crowded that you couldn’t move. Still worth a visit to take a stroll. Taking a taxi back and forth is relatively easy.
