Panshan Mountain (盘山, Mount Pan), located to the west of Jixian County, is a renowned mountain in the Beijing–Tianjin area. In the year 207 AD, when Cao Cao led his army on a northern expedition against the Wuhuan, Tian Chou offered his services as a guide, contributing significantly to the victory. Despite being offered rewards by Cao Cao, Tian Chou chose to remain on the mountain, and the people began to refer to it as Tian Panshan, eventually shortening it to Panshan Mountain.
The history of Panshan dates back to the Han Dynasty, flourished during the Tang Dynasty, and reached its peak during the Qing Dynasty. Over time, the mountain hosted 72 temples and 13 exquisite pagodas. Among its treasures was the Royal Garden – Jingji Mountain Resort. Renowned as the “Eastern Wutai Mountain” in the Buddhist community during the Tang Dynasty, it gained further fame during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty as the “Number One Mountain in the East of the Capital.” In the early years of the Republic of China, Panshan was listed alongside Tai Mountain, West Lake, and the Forbidden City as one of China’s fifteen major attractions.
Unfortunately, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Panshan served as one of the revolutionary bases in eastern Hebei. Finally, the weekend with good weather has arrived! Although I was worried that all the autumn leaves on the mountain had fallen, I decided to take a chance. To my surprise, the fallen leaves on the winding mountain paths created a watercolor painting-like effect.
Entering through the main gate and taking the left route, it’s about 10 kilometers to reach the Guanyue Peak. There aren’t any sections that require climbing using both hands and feet, so for those who enjoy hiking and trekking, the difficulty level is not high. After reaching the top, you can take the cable car and sightseeing vehicle down to the parking lot for 100 yuan.
Today, I took a day trip to Panshan Mountain, despite the rain soaking me through. I saw many ancient trees that are over a hundred years old.
