Suzhou‘s Pingjiang Road (平江路), nestled to the south of the renowned Humble Administrator’s Garden, boasts a history spanning over 2,500 years, making it one of the most well-preserved ancient streets in the region. Merely a narrow lane away from the bustling Guanqian Street to the west, Pingjiang Road exudes a serene and antiquated ambiance, a stark contrast to its neighbor. Strolling along this historic street, admiring the architecture, and indulging in local snacks create an exceptionally delightful experience.
At the heart of the district lies Pingjiang Road, surrounded by alleys like Xuanqiao Lane, Daru Lane, Weidao Guanqian, Zhong Zhangjia Lane, and Daxin Qiao Lane. Particularly to the east, numerous water alleys add to the distinctive charm, where the juxtaposition of land and water, streets and rivers, captures the essence of a classic Jiangnan water town.
Preserving the old charm of the streets and lanes, even the transformed bars, souvenir shops, and cafes don’t flaunt their modernity, seamlessly blending into the surroundings like traditional dwellings. The old houses with their white walls, gray tiles, and wooden doors and windows reveals a subtle and tasteful elegance. Moreover, a boat ride on Pingjiang River from the upstream dock allows visitors to explore the waterways, with the evening lights casting a mesmerizing glow on the bridges, water, and ancient houses.

Highlights of Pingjiang Road
Ancient Architecture
The surroundings of Pingjiang Road feature a plethora of old-fashioned residences, a rare sight in a city often dominated by modern skyscrapers. Houses on the western bank of the river, mostly built along its edge, exhibit the characteristics of aged dwellings – white walls, blue-green tiles, wooden lattice windows, and predominantly reddish-brown or dark-brown wooden elements. Ivy and creeping plants gracefully adorn the walls, swaying with the breeze. These quiet abodes, nestled along the tranquil waterway, create a picturesque panorama.
Water Alleys
Pingjiang Road, a riverside path, connects to the Humble Administrator’s Garden in the north and offers a view of the twin towers in the south. Stretching 1606 meters, this historic water alley has been a prominent thoroughfare in Suzhou since the Southern Song Dynasty. Over 800 years, Pingjiang Road has retained not only its riverine form and street structure but also the characteristic water town layout of “parallel waterways and streets.” In contrast to other old streets like Shantang Street, Pingjiang Road embraces a more subdued commercial atmosphere, preserving the essence of traditional neighborhoods and local customs.
Arts and Crafts
The arts and crafts scene in Pingjiang Road, Suzhou, is a treasure trove of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and creativity. As visitors meander through this historic street, they encounter a diverse array of skilled artisans showcasing their talents. From delicate silk products and intricately embroidered items to exquisite calligraphy and traditional paintings, the offerings reflect the city’s rich artistic heritage. Visitors can browse through charming shops and boutiques, discovering unique souvenirs and handcrafted gifts. The arts and crafts on display capture the essence of Suzhou’s cultural traditions, making Pingjiang Road a must-visit destination for those seeking to embrace the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese art.
Cullinary Delights
The gastronomic scene along Pingjiang Road is closely tied to Suzhou’s ancient culinary culture. The street’s food culture stands out in three distinct ways:
- Street-side Delicacies: Locally prepared street-side delicacies showcase the authentic culinary skills of the original residents. Attired in traditional Jiangnan costumes, they skillfully present their dishes along the street.
- Quaint Shopfronts: Nestled under tiled roofs and against white-bricked walls, these unassuming shops attract food enthusiasts seeking authentic flavors. For instance, next to Pingjiang Inn, there’s a renowned Juezhi Street Dumpling House, where the succulent and fragrant Suwei Yapian Fish Head leaves an unforgettable impression.
- Traditional Restaurants: Larger restaurants primarily focus on Suzhou cuisine, offering a taste of authentic old flavors. Dishes like Squirrel-shaped Mandarin Fish, Crab Roe Tofu, and Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs exemplify the richness of Suzhou’s culinary heritage.

Night tour of Pingjiang Road during the off-season was quite tranquil, as there weren’t many people on the streets. Although it was the weekend, most shops closed early. However, strolling around like this allowed me to better appreciate the charm of the Jiangnan water towns.
After 9 o’clock, there are significantly fewer people on Pingjiang Road, making the streets feel much more spacious. However, around 10 o’clock, many shops will close for the night. Walking along the street at this time, you can also feel the fresher air.
The hot weather has passed, and the long holiday is over. During this period, the temperatures are pleasant, the weather is clear, and the visitor flow is just right. It’s the most suitable time to come at the end of the year.
The scenery is truly beautiful, though it is still a bit hot.
The milk tea with a tea-colored mist (茶色烟雨) is really delicious and has captured my heart.
The sweet porridge (糖粥) is tasty! Super delicious! The sweetness is just right and it’s very refreshing! The pig trotter (猪蹄) is also very tender!
The weather was incredibly hot when I visited Pingjiang Road, and I had no desire to take photos. I originally planned to rent traditional clothing for a photoshoot, but the heat was just too much. I decided it would be better to go in the evening instead.
Pingjiang Road, I feel like the atmosphere would be better on a rainy day, but it was too hot when I visited so I didn’t feel like exploring further. Inside and outside, there are many shops selling traditional Chinese clothing (hanfu) for photo opportunities (the storefronts are quite exquisite). People who want to try wearing hanfu can come here, but it’s too hot to wear hanfu in over 30 degrees Celsius. Personally, I feel that the main scenery there is… Read more »

On a Saturday morning at 6:30 am, Pingjiang Road exudes a sleepy charm that has just awakened. Little sparrows stroll on the ground in search of food while elderly people taking a morning walk and idle wanderers like me pass by without disturbing them. After all, Thy have been used to the terrifying crowds on Pingjiang Road. Taking a leisurely stroll, pausing to take photos, it took me an hour and a half to complete the walk. The reputation of Pingjiang Road is mixed, but personally, I really love it. During my four days in Suzhou, I went to Pingjiang Road three times. On the first day, I listened to Suzhou Pingtan and bought tickets from blind boxes, and I heard Teacher Wu Liangying’s rendition of “Sheng Sheng Man.” On the second day, I checked out the popular Suzhou wall, which I stumbled upon on my way back from Canglang Pavilion. On the fourth day, it rained,… Read more »
