Shengshan Island (嵊山岛), located at the easternmost end of the Shengsi Islands in Zhoushan City, was historically known as Chenqianshan or Jinshan. It’s referred to as the “Edge of the Sky” in the East China Sea and the birthplace of the sun. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Shengshan Island became a significant fishing base, serving as the center of the Shengshan fishing grounds and a hub for the distribution of aquatic products. During the fishing season, it attracted fishing boats and fishermen from Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, making it a crucial site for maritime fishing activities.
Two notable attractions on Shengshan Island are the East Cliff and the fishing lights at Shengshan Fishing Port. The East Cliff is a stunning stretch of coastline over 1000 meters long, rising dramatically from the sea to heights between 60 to 70 meters, with some points reaching over 80 meters. Its winding and majestic scenery is awe-inspiring, with roaring waves crashing against the cliffs. Standing atop the East Cliff, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the vast sea dotted with fishing boats, creating a sense of tranquility and awe. Additionally, the island features the renowned “Lovers’ Stone” among its Shengsi stone landscapes and sandy beaches ideal for summer swimming, making it a must-visit destination for tourists.
Moreover, due to its relatively remote location and sparse human presence, Shengshan Island has retained its natural beauty, making it an excellent location for capturing island scenery and adventurous exploration activities.
