Songyuan Forest Park (松苑原始森林公园) is located in Mohe County, in District 16. Established in 1971 during the initial development of the county seat, this park was preserved as a slice of primordial forest for visitors to enjoy and to help purify the urban atmosphere. It was officially designated as Songyuan Park in 1983.
The park spans 282 meters in length from east to west and 182 meters in width from north to south, with a total timber volume of 400 cubic meters. The primary tree species is larch, complemented by the unique Xingan Rhododendron, commonly known as Dazixiang. This plant only grows in high-latitude, cold regions, blooming in May each year. When the rhododendrons are in full flower, the park transforms into a sea of blossoms, with the vibrant greens of the trees and the sweet scent of flowers creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Songyuan Forest Park features two entrances, with the western gate serving as the main entrance, adorned with the inscription “Songyuan” by Chen Lei, the former governor of Heilongjiang Province. Colorful murals flanking the gate enhance the park’s inviting atmosphere. The park is well-maintained, with shaded pathways and stone tables and wooden benches, making it one of the few urban primitive forest parks in the country.
Remarkably, on May 6, 1987, a devastating fire swept through the area, yet Songyuan Park miraculously escaped destruction. This event led locals to share tales of the park’s good fortune, suggesting that the park is a blessed place. A marble monument titled “Songyuan Record” commemorates this extraordinary event, solidifying the park’s significance in the community.
