Ussuri Sandbar (乌苏里浅滩) is located at the northernmost point of China, on the banks of the Heilongjiang River. Formed by sediment from the river, the sandbar spans an area of approximately 50 square kilometers and lies directly across from Russia. It derives its name from a former border post known as “Kalen” established during the Qing Dynasty, hence the name “Ussuri Sandbar.”
The landscape here is characterized by magnificent river scenery, with expansive, flat banks that stretch as far as the eye can see. In winter, the area transforms into a stunning winter wonderland, blanketed in snow and exuding a serene beauty.
Surrounded by pristine forests predominantly consisting of larch trees, Ussuri Sandbar becomes a visual feast in autumn, as the foliage turns a brilliant gold, creating a picturesque setting akin to a painting. The tranquility of this remote area offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Reaching Ussuri Sandbar involves a scenic journey along a 30-kilometer mountain road from the entrance located on the Molo Road. This road features both straight and winding sections, providing drivers with breathtaking views of the untouched Russian forests across the river. The vibrant green of the fir trees and the golden hues of the larches intermingle, while the mighty river flows silently in between, showcasing a beauty rarely found elsewhere on Earth.
Visitors can also find two notable stones on the sandbar: one reads “North Country Pillar Stone,” while the other congratulates you on finding the northernmost point. Ussuri Sandbar is not just a geographic landmark but also a stunning natural wonder, ideal for exploration and appreciation of the great outdoors.
