Wanghai Peak (望海峰), located on the East Terrace of Wutai Mountain, is a prominent and iconic feature in this renowned Buddhist mountain range. Situated about 10 kilometers east of Taihuai Town, Wanghai Peak stands at an elevation of 2,795 meters and covers an area of over 100 acres. The peak’s distinctive shape resembles a giant standing elephant when viewed from afar, and from its summit, it can appear like an enormous turtle shell.
The history of Wanghai Peak dates back to the Sui Dynasty when the first temple was established on the peak. During the Yuan Dynasty, this temple was rebuilt and named Wang Hai Temple, meaning “Looking at the Sea Temple.” The temple was further renovated during the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing period. It is renowned for housing the statue of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The peak is especially famous for its breathtaking sunrises, with the “Sea of Clouds Sunrise” being one of the most spectacular views in Wutai Mountain. On clear summer days, visitors ascending the peak at dawn can witness the sun emerging from the sea of clouds, creating a mesmerizing and awe-inspiring spectacle.
At the peak of Wanghai, visitors can find the Lizi Pagoda (Hat Pagoda), built during the Northern Song Dynasty’s Xuanhe period. This pagoda, which adds to the cultural and historical significance of the site, stands as a symbol of the peak’s ancient heritage. Additionally, near the East Terrace of Wanghai Peak lies a rock cave known as Luoyan Cave. This cave is noted for its cool and refreshing atmosphere even in the height of summer, with ice often found inside. According to local legend, a mysterious monk once entered Luoyan Cave and never returned. The only clue left behind was a hat, which led to the construction of the pagoda to honor the memory of the monk.
To the north of the peak lies Zao Lin Slope, an area covered with a sparse forest that looks bleak and expansive. There is a legend from the Northern Wei Dynasty’s Yong’an period about a hunter named Yanqing, who once chased a deer to this area. His servant, guided by an elder, discovered a jujube orchard, filled his pockets with jujubes, and returned to present them to Yanqing. Surprised by the presence of a jujube orchard in such a high-altitude, cold region, Yanqing later retraced the steps to find that the orchard had vanished. This led to the naming of the slope as Zao Lin Slope, meaning “Jujube Orchard Slope.”
Wanghai Peak not only offers breathtaking natural beauty and legendary historical sites but also provides a profound sense of tranquility and spiritual reflection. It remains one of the highlights of Wutai Mountain, drawing visitors who seek to experience both its majestic landscapes and its deep cultural heritage.
