After the monastery was destroyed during a rebellion, Zhu joined a rebel group called the Red Turbans, which aimed to overthrow the Mongol rule.
Under the leadership of Zhu Yuanzhang, the Red Turbans grew in strength and popularity. They advocated for the restoration of the Han Chinese rule and the establishment of a new dynasty. Zhu was an effective military strategist and gained the support of many disaffected peasants, soldiers, and local officials who were tired of Yuan Dynasty’s misrule.
In 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang’s rebel forces successfully overthrew the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty and established the Ming Dynasty. He declared himself Emperor Hongwu and took measures to consolidate his power and stabilize the country. Zhu implemented various reforms to strengthen the central government, including land redistribution, tax reforms, and the establishment of a nationwide military system.
Zhu’s rebellion and the establishment of the Ming Dynasty brought an end to nearly a century of Mongol rule in China. His uprising was fueled by a combination of popular discontent, personal experiences of hardship, and effective leadership skills. The Ming Dynasty would go on to become one of China’s most prosperous and culturally vibrant periods in history, lasting for nearly three centuries.
