Wulongtan Park (五龙潭公园), located just outside the west gate of the old city of Jinan, is a scenic area covering an area of 5.44 hectares. It is renowned for its picturesque setting between two iconic landmarks: to the south lies Baotu Spring, and to the north, Daming Lake. The park derives its name from the Wulongtan (Five Dragon Pond) located within its grounds. Legend has it that Wulongtan was once the residence of the Tang dynasty hero Qin Qiong, which later sank and transformed into the pond after heavy rains.
Wulongtan is celebrated as one of Jinan’s “Four Famous Springs,” alongside Baotu Spring, Heihu Spring, and Pearl Spring. Among these, Wulongtan is reputed to have the best water quality. The park features a variety of springs: ancient hot springs like Geleisu Spring, Dongliu Spring, Huima Spring, and Lianquan Spring; vigorous springs such as Yuma Spring and Qingquan Spring, where water sprays out vigorously; cascading springs like Gongjiachi Spring and Qiuxi Spring; and unique springs like Tianjing Spring, Mizhi Spring, Xianqing Spring, Bingxi Quan, Jingming Spring, and Qishisan Spring.
During the peak water season, visitors can enjoy not only the scenic springs but also explore historical sites such as the former residence of Qin Qiong, the old site of the Shandong Provincial Government Office, the ancient calendar pavilion, and the calligraphy and seal carving exhibition of Wu Zhongqi. The “Gate Guardian – Qin Qiong’s Former Residence” site, honoring the military achievements of General Qin Qiong during the Tang Dynasty, is also a designated key cultural heritage site in Jinan.
Wulongtan Park is particularly enchanting during the months of April and October when flowers bloom abundantly throughout the park, filling the air with delightful fragrances. It’s an ideal time for visitors to enjoy the blossoms and the tranquil beauty of the park.
